Why do we put ketchup on french fries but not on mashed or boiled potatoes?

Oh, and what condiment do you folks use the most? I think mine would be a toss up between: Diana Sauce, Ketchup or this Chinese super hot sauce.

Boiled or mashed potatoes are soft, right? Not crispy and such.

Ketchup sits on the surface, and can be spread around the plate, dipped, and the food (in this case, the french fries) doesn't absorb it too much, and become too ketchup flavoured that it's actually tomato with a potato taste to it.

Fries have a different flavour to it as well, normally from added salt or at least the oil it was fried in. Mashed potatoes? Normally are plain, unless herbs have been added, or eggs, milk or butter. Sometimes cheese, I guess. Either way, ketchup on those would mean they'd both turn pink and the sauce would be absorbed, somewhat.

I guess just putting ketchup on your mash potatoes and not mixing it in would be fine though, but what fun is that? The only liquid that should be put on your mash is gravy, in my opinion. And your saliva, of course - but never until it is actually in your mouth. Stomach acid is another story.

Boiled potatoes are soft potatoes, and basically the same applies for the above. The flavour is just all wrong unless you have oil and salt mixed in with it. And a crispy or hard surface to play with it with.

I don't actually use many condiments. I would probably have to say it's a tie between BBQ sauce and Mustard and Honey dip, really.

This largely depends on what I eat. Which would be breaded chicken dippers, or wedges, respectively.

I put it on everything and because I'm hotter the hell I add Tabasco to the mix with Ketchup it support me with the scoville units to prevent heart attacks and the Lycopene to give me prostate good health. ...Winning combination.

I actually know some people who do put ketchup on mashed potatoes. It looks gross because it's mashed up with red stuff, but fries with ketchup are the same thing if you think about it.

Favorite condiments:

-Hot sauce(Tabasco)

-Ketchup

-Mayo

-That one hot chinese hot sauce. It's kind of thick and always at buffets

Since when? I put ketchup on everything, even mashed potatoes. there is no such ketchup forbiddance law in my house! I also love pesto. I nearly put pesto on everything, including pizza ^_^ yummay!

Mash and boiled potatoes aren't fried, which french fries are. Ketchup + fried = good!
