Why do women have two breasts on their chest? Not one, not three, not four, but two?

There are some women who have 3 or more nipples. It's rare, but that means that the average number of nipples a woman has is 2.1.

There are a several reasons why women have 2 breasts:
1. It balances the body, so that the spine is not curved
2. Women can have twins, so there's one for each offspring
3. One is a spare. When nursing a young one, if one breast isn't working well (which is common), teh other one can
4. Cleavage between breasts can attract a potential mate

All mammals tend to have twice the number of nipples to that of the usual number of offspring. So humans normally having 1 child at a time have 2 breasts. 1 to alternate feeding and the load, 2 to take over the job if one isn't producing enough milk. Evolution hasn't added parts we don't need because it's wasteful of resources, so hence 2 breasts.

As mentioned mammals have twice the number of breasts as typical number of offspring. Elephants as another example typically have one calf & thus only two breasts.

Because evolution went this way, and a large mono-boob just wasn't the best evolutionary option. I think that would also affect balance or something, and women would have sore backs with a mono-boob. Two boobs for two legs and two arms, means balance.

The thing is that a mammal needs to "essentially" have enough milk producing areas to feed all young produced at a time. Twins are extremely more common than triplets (more common than one child is to twins). Anything beyond triplets is probably not naturally occurring.

My best guess is that there are two breasts because that’s the overall pattern in the human body. And really, there are also only 2 of each finger and toe since there’s 2 thumbs, 2 pinkies, etc.
