I am from India, and we need to travel by trains frequently, because there are many places we cannot go by air, or hire a car for long distance. Most of the time I have traveled in trains, I have traveled in Rajdhani trains or in upper class โ second AC or Chair car. Cleaning is usually enough good in these trains, but I have always used funnels available in medical stores that let women pee while standing without making a mess and without coming in contact with any surface of toilets to avoid chances of infections. . Yes. There are funnels available that will let women pee while standing without making a mess. Some funnels available in stores are reusable, while the Stand Up funnel I usually keep with me are disposable and biodegradable too. I usually keep disposable ones several with me during travel, either by train or other transport services โ even hired car. In hiking circles, these funnels are called female urination devices - FUDs, and they can come in quite handy on the trail.
Apparently, healthy men can empty their bladders very effectively sitting or standing โ in any position. However, sitting is still the best practice for men and women both, and people with urinary issues - urinary urgency, frequency, weak stream, etc. men hardly pee in sitting position, and design of their organ is helpful for that.
There are certainly times for women when standing to void would be ideal. Sitting on a filthy public toilet or in a stall without seat covers, or not enough toilet paper for wiping and covering the seat is unappealing at best. Squatting or hovering over the public toilet seat is an option, but not always realistic โ particularly during travel.
For women, sitting is the best way to empty the bladder. The goal each time you urinate is to void as much as possible. Any residual urine in the bladder also can lead to a urinary tract infection. When you sit on the toilet, your pelvic floor muscles stay relaxed and the urethral sphincter is left wide open for easy, complete urination.
You actually can pee in standing position using FUD, and it is surprisingly effective for women. It takes a bit longer than sitting, but you will be able to eliminate the same amount of pee as you might be eliminating in sitting down position. There are many brands and variations available, and if you cannot bring yourself to use a funnel, you can purchase them on line or as usual, you may sit on a public toilet. I usually purchase disposable from medical store. It may not be your happiest moment, but it is highly unlikely you will catch any germs from sitting on a toilet seat. If possible โ just wash it with some water before using them. Stand up to pee or sit down to peeโyour choice.
It's very long since I travelled in train. I don't remember. I have travelled by airplanes mostly.
Welcome ๐ Af. n
I bet they're hygienic, clean, neat and safe in the rest of the world's trains...
But on the trains in the South Asian subcontinent (Pakistan, India and Bangladesh) it's very difficult to save yourself from stepping into someone's pee or getting smeared by someone's poo... Not to mention the never existing toilet paper, and water taps that only carry air in them...
Yes, I remember taking the train when I was a kid. I remember that when you flushed, whatever that was in there just got dumped onto the tracks. You could actually see the railroad ties

No because you never know who was in there before you. Or worse, wondering who will be in there after me.
Not a train. I've used a motorhome bathroom though.
I traveled from Los Angeles to Chicago by train. One of the best experiences in my life. Not only did I use the bathroom, I showered on a train.
Yes. You can watch the tracks going by underneath you from the toilets on the Amsterdam trains. 😳
yes, just sort of brace yourself and take a squirt.
They are as repelling as it can get. I have rarely used them... as some kind of emergency only.
