Who delivers your baby?

So you are about to have a baby - soon. Do you (or your husband if you have one) want an obstetrician, a midwife, or just anyone to deliver it? An obstetrician is the best choice, a midwife is sort of ok if nothing goes wrong, and just anyone is ridiculous. Guys should vote too - it's your kid!

The main advantage of the obstetrician is if something goes wrong they know what to do. The main advantage of the midwife is they save you some money.

Nurse here! This isn't my area of specialty, but my suggestion is using an Obstetrician or at least a nurse midwife.

I say nurse midwife as that guarantees a licensed professional caring for you during your pregnancy and childbirth. In some states, being a midwife doesn't require the advanced schooling that a nurse midwife does.

Here it’s always a midwife (and an assistent of hers present in the delivery room) that delivers the baby at the hospitals, unless something goes wrong, instruments are used, it’s a c-section or other risks are involved. If so it’s a doctor. I have 3 kids and the oldest was delivered by a doctor with help of vacuum. The other 2 by midwives. I obviously prefer midwives because that means things are progressing more normally. Midwives, at least the ones here, are experts at what they do and well trained. They’re registered nurses that had 1,5 years additional schooling at university after regular nursing school and they have to have attended (and helped delivered the babies under supervision from an experienced midwife or doctor) at least 50 births before they graduate from midwifery school. After graduating they can apply for a license and only after getting the license can they get a job as a midwife.

Had great experience with a midwife. My son was born at my home, which he will inherit. Seems appropo, doesn't it?

Short labor, 6 hours, and though a little hitch, it was a common one and easily taken care of. My 26 year old seems to have the majority of his brains intact. Most days.

we really had my wife's gynnecologist do it. They were all C-sections.

In the UK it’s going to be a midwife.

They are very well trained in the UK and it’s only when complications are likely that a doctor would be involved.

@msc545 it’s Free, there is no money exchanged, the department has obstetricians available.

It’s a waste of resource tying up an obstetrician with a routine delivery, especially if needed elsewhere.

jk lol. I'm flexible, so I'll just go with whatever she wants. Though it would seem like the midwife would be the better choice because then you don't have to pay a hospital to rent their bed for $10,000 a night, since you're in your own home.
