Eye contact overexposure leads to redness. Chlorine is a biocide that reacts with anything organic (carbon based). Chloramines are the “combined chlorine” measured in a pool. The sum of combined chlorine and free chlorine as hypochlorous acid are the total chlorine.

At 0.3% (3,000 ppm), which also happens to be around its water solubility, it can be very corrosive which causes eye irritation. As far as the chlorine is concerned, it’s indiscriminant and will disinfect whatever it touches. What you may be smelling is volatile organics (chloramines). But make no mistake, opening your eyes under water will cause redness, even in a “virgin” pool that is free of amines.

Nothing in this article says chlorine won’t cause ete redness. All it does is blame it on another irritant. A lot of chemicals are eye irritants in high enough concentrations.

Check your facts buddy, in low levels it's not poisonous. Swimming pools use chlorine in small quantities to kill harmful bacteria in the water. Water companies also chlorinate the supplies to kill off harmful bacteria in the stuff you drink. And if you go and google this, you'll find loads of articles about this very topic. Lesson?
