What things cause dust mites an what effects do they have on our health?

I don't know where they come from, but they are allergens and they can effect dogs' ears as well as cats, I guess... and they are bad for allergy sufferers, like myself. Getting rid of carpet and installing hardwood floors or vinyl/tile is best to get rid of them, and also frequent vacuuming.

All I know is that they are tiny and live in the house in the dust that collects in certain places. A good reason to vacuum the carpet and dust regularly.
