What’s the real etiquette?

When going to a public sauna (steam room) do you have to have swimsuit or towel on or can you go in completely naked and just sit on a towel?

Ask first. It also depends on where you live, in Europe many saunas are coed and nude. Many will have a ‘ladies only’ day in the week for women who don’t want to see naked men. The other way round does not exist or would be a gay sauna.

Important rule in any sauna, always a towel between you and the wooden benches.

Always fun to see Americans here in European saunas being shocked about the coed part :)

One is supposed to wear a covering and that can be a towel wrap like a long skirt or a diaper. It is even more stringent since COVID. It use to be, "sit that arse on a towel" but I have not seen that since COVID.

Sauna at my gym is single sex so just sit on a towel nude
