This is a seated chest fly machine. When seated you put your hands on the outter part of each bar and push it in towards you. It words out your chest muscles. If you sit or stand towards the back of the of the seat and put your hands behind or on the inner side of the bar and pull the bar behind you (its kinda hard to explain) you can work out your back/ lats muscles. It also looks like it has a cable on top of the machine. Attach a bar and you can do more lat workouts or shoulder exercises. Feeling sore is normal when working out as your muscle fibres ripe and reheal. It’s important to stretch before and after
The handles were really far behind me when I was sat in the seat, when I reached behind me to grab the handles, that’s the part that hurt me. Was I sitting on it wrong?
Handles can change position for back facing position so that they can get in reach
If the handles were not in reach i can see that as being a potential injury hazard. Depending on the model there is usually a retractable knob you can pull down on to adjust positioning. So with the image you have shown there is a knob on the horizontal arm. With cable machines is always good to inspect it before using as the last individual had it set to their needs. You weren’t sitting on it wrong it was just not set to your comfort level
I see. Thank you for explaining that. I didn’t know that part of the machine was adjustable. I figured the only adjustable part was the weight.
Seat can be height adjustable too. Make sure you lock it right and avoid injuries
you have to adjust the handles so they are not so far back. someone whom is more flexible and conditioned can go further. have the gym show you how to setup machines or watch videos. yes... you can hurt yourself at a gym easily.
maybe a few rounds with a personal trainer pay good dividends. be glad you are young... recovery time at older age is longer. good to get started and keep in shape.
I think it's called the pec dec or seated fly machine, although there's two ways to use it.
The first way, you put your back against the padding and do some chest flies, just make sure the grip things are in a comfortable position, so you aren't over stretching your shoulder joint.
Alternatively, you can hit your rear delts and rhomboids by doing it the other way around, so basically sit the other way around, so your chest is against the padding, adjust the handles so you can comfortably grip it and then do the fly motion in reverse.

fly machine, use very low weights, and slow non swinging motion unless you want to injure yourself.
Personally its best you avoid it there are much better much safer cable machines
Could you please recommend some better and safer machines?
I think this particular machine is ajustible to where you can do back flys or chest flys on it. Peck deck... back fly machine... I'm not really sure what it's technical name is.
It is a pec deck or a chest machine. You sit on it facing outward, grab the handles and with your elbows slightly bent bring them together.
It’s basically a vertical bench press, but called a seated chest fly machine for development of your chest muscles
I don't recall the name but I'm pretty sure the idea is you have a hand on each bar and you push them forward and bring them together in front of you, then put them back again and repeat.
I see little knows to pull to change handle position for reverse fly
