Social-media platforms pose “a profound risk of harm to the mental health and well-being of children,” and there is not enough evidence “to determine if social media is sufficiently safe for children and adolescents,” according to an advisory note from the U. S. surgeon general.
Tuesday’s 25-page advisory comes as the possible effects of social media on the mental health of children and teens has in recent years come into increasingly sharp focus. The surgeon general cites one study finding that kids aged 12 to 15 who spent more than three hours a day on social media faced twice the risk of a negative mental-health outcome, particularly depression and anxiety, compared with people in the same age range who didn’t use social media at all.
And there has been some evidence linking social-media usage to poor mental-health outcomes in young girls, in particular, compared with boys. “Greater social media use predicted poor sleep, online harassment, poor body image, low self-esteem, and higher depressive symptom scores with a larger association for girls than boys,” reads one study of 14-year-olds cited in the surgeon general’s advisory.

Unrestricted information on the internet is vital, but I agree that social media is toxic.
But the last person whose word I would take in regard to health is Vivek Murthy. He's a Democratic political spokesman who couldn't care less about mental health or human life.
His motive for talking about social media a desire to limit people's access only to the officially approved narrative.

Yes, I mean what I have seen here , and I am quite a mature kind of thinking kind of person. I mean my heart comes out to the women below 25. There was this girl who I don't know, either she broke up with her boyfriend or something, she looked pretty in a mess and may be she heard her boyfriend got a gal or something , or some bad stuff , but , she posts a picture of her uncombed self saying,,,,, how ugly am I. And all these kids instead of not joining in her nonsense, and may be straight away catching on what is going on here and kind of giving her support,,,,, they all , even girls started hurling insults at her, like, hey u are so ugly,,,, your nose sticks out like a pig and your hair is like rags and stuff. Man, I just could not bare it to see this kid be thrashed. I had to intervene. I at once told them, just to stop them , that,,,, hey , She's my girlfriend , and I love her very much and she is very beautiful so stop it. The few guys who still did not stop , I was very rude to them. But just think what must that poor girl thinking. I mean this place is masquerading as a social site , when it's not a social site. It's a forum based site, so there is no proper moderators to even stop all this shit. I mean you have thousands of people here and tens of thousands of interactions, it is just a bomb waiting to explode. It's not a matter of if, its a matter of when. Some poor kid is going to get hurt. I mean , there just does not seem to be any adults in the room. I must be honest, it has crossed my mind at many times, also there is no access to the administration here either. I must say I have been around the internet, and this place is quite up there with the toxic atmosphere. I'd really like some adult input. I guess you are too young to understand may be.
That was pretty obvious already. Social media is terrible. It was once good but has become a bad entity.
