No. Gluttony isn't a contagious disease.

Yes. There is actually some truth to this.

Trump's morbid obesity discourages others to gorge.

There are both genetic and environmental components to obesity. If you have one obese parent, you have a 30% chance of being obese yourself. If you have two, I'd suspect it would be 60%.

There are some studies that show people who hang around with obese people who are a normal weight, mimic the heavier people's habits and gain weight.

You've all seen couples where one person is fat and the other thin. Sometimes the thin person fattens up. You seldom see the fat person slim down.

Why would that be? If a person has been obese their entire life, they are at a kind of "set point" weight. If they lose weight, their body thinks they are starving and pushes to keep them at their original set point.

You've all seen "Biggest Losers," who slim down momentarily, during the show, and 2 to 5 years later, are back to, or even heavier than when they were in the contest.

Of course they were exercising every day: heavy, hard exercising, eating little to nothing, and they were in a confined environment where they couldn't eat as they normally had. They also had free personal trainers, dietitians, and motivation to win a contest. When the personal trainers, restrictive eating and heavy exercise and money goal was gone, and they returned home, they reverted to former eating habits and the result would be former weights.

ANYONE CAN LOSE WEIGHT!!! The long-term issue is to keep it off.

None of those people on "Biggest Loser" kept up the insane exercise schedules because it would be nearly impossible in normal life: they had children, jobs and home maintenance to take care of. Those things were completely taken off their plates during the contest. They could concentrate on one issue-- weight loss, and the secondary issue of exercise.

And there is the psychological and physical dynamic. Maybe the spouse of this person prefers them fat because they are attractive to fewer people. They are disinterested in activities outside the home. Since they are out of shape, they can't DO much outside the home, either.

So genetically contagious. Yes. Lots of studies support this. Socially contagious: in some cases. Psychologically contagious: It's possible. When people eat poorly, too many processed foods, too many sugary drinks, too much alcohol, don't exercise, and most importantly, START OFF FAT FROM CHILDHOOD!!! Live in a family of people who eat poorly, have no positive, healthy examples of good eating, regular exercise, the outlook for them being at healthy weights is just as poor.

I don’t know what Trump said, but I think some people might see obese people happy and think “maybe it wouldn’t be as bad as I’m concerned about”, which could cause them to loose focus on trying to prevent it from happening to themselves.

As society becomes fatter, to be fat seems more normal. So, it is socially contagious. However, nobody is forcing anyone to down 6 donuts per day. Trump is just one out of millions of obese people. He at least has the excuse of age. But 20-30 year olds weighing 300 pounds takes special effort
