What causes high anti-TG levels and how is it treated?

Thyroglobulin (Tg) is a large protein secreted by the thyroid gland that helps produce and store thyroid hormones. Those fluctuate with iodine levels, and elevated levels of Tg can indicate excess or deficiency of iodine. The immune system also detects higher amounts of Tg in the bloodstream and consequently makes Tg antibodies to combat these levels.

Disorders that cause the thyroid gland to produce elevated levels of Tg can be autoimmune disease, cancer, and nodules. Those can cause TgAb levels to be elevated.

TgAb may be elevated for a variety of reasons. Usually, it is due to a thyroid problem, but these antibodies may appear in people with other autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, Celiac disease, and type 1 diabetes.

Your physician or perhaps an endocrinologist would be able to determine the cause of the elevated Tg levels. In any case, this is something you have to look into.
