What do you do when you wake early, and can't go back to sleep?

Question

For me, early in the sack, early up in the morning but not THAT early...2:30 A. M. !

Try as I might I could not get back to sleep, so I got up and drove down the 405, to Costa Mesa, and back on the side streets... hardly saw more that 5 or 6 cars. "Weird" ! Took an hour, but I came back and was finally able to get to sleep until 6.

What do you do?

Check my body for why. Is it pain? No? Wait what time is it...3:43 Am... is someone having sex next door to me? No? Is it gas due to drinking too many beers with gluten? Probably so.

So what I do if I can solve it? Just... try to just ignore it and go back to sleep. But if it's pain such as a charlie horse or tooth nerves on fire... good god, i'm taking all the pills I can find.

When I wake at that time in the morning I'm done. There is no chance of getting back to sleep. My mind instantly starts thinking about work and tries to solve all the problems in the world... I never solve anything and I never get back to sleep either.

If I have an issue, falling back asleep, and my wife is out of town, I will typically read, and that gets me right back under the influence of the sea monster. If she's home, I will typically move out to the couch, or try some deep breathing.
I usually know if I'm gonna have a rough night of sleeping, because I'll have a lot on my mind going to bed, which is never a good idea. Often times the late evening dog walk helps.
