I always hated how people thought I was skinny in the US and teased me, saying I need to eat more. I tried to stay polite but wanted to retort, "Human beings aren't supposed to look like you! Are you sure I'm the one with the problem?" 😅
On averages though, it might be the case that the obese extremes are really skewing the median and not very representative of the mode. I found in the US that while there's a shocking number of obese people, there are also people so skinny that they would be considered skinny even in Japan, as well as exceptionally athletic and fit people. There's quite a variety, but definitely way too many obese people.
Trust me man. It's the same in Canada too. I have an athletic build and people always compliment me at the beach when I'm shirtless, but when I wear clothes people always skinny shame me.
I hate that skinny-shaming stuff so much but especially in a nation with a serious obesity and health problem. I'm willing to bet that such people would probably skinny-shame even Bruce Lee:
When he was a superhuman athlete.
Yeah man. Bruce Lee could've kicked any of their asses
For sure! If you'll forgive a shameless share, I'm also not that skinny and actually over 26 BMI (in the "overweight" category). Yet I do have a small build and tiny waist. I still end up getting skinny-shamed by big Americans.
But this is my physique. Recently been trying to grow my bis since they were always a weak point:
I'm a lifelong sprinter and long jumper so most of my mass is in my lower body. But I'm hardly a featherweight.
Yeah man that's a good physique. I can definitely see an Asian Bruce Lee kind of physique. Definitely bigger than him by a fair bit in terms of size and muscle, but your proportions are similar for the torso area. Lookin good man! You definitely stay in shape. Definitely not like the potato Americans š
Cheers! š¤ I actually want to cut a bit. A bit soft around the midsection lately. But definitely that skinny-shaming stuff gave me a bit of a complex when I was younger.
I'm pretty happy with my proportions, but I do think I just need to eat a bit more for some size. Back in the day, I used to do human flags, behind-the-back clapping pushups, muscle ups, handstand pushups and was able to do 250 pushups at once (yes with proper form). Now all I can do are handstand pushups these days out of those š Age is making my body crack and break down easily, but I still maintain my definition pretty well.
Nice! I have a strong preference for calisthenics as well. I never wanted to put on so much mass that it messes up my ability to do pull-ups or climb trees, e. g., or sprint fast. I think the strongman and powerlifter types are super cool but I favor more the type of build that most easily resists his/her own bodyweight first and foremost over the one that can deadlift a truck.
Same here man. I think it's a lot more useful to be able mobile with with your body and still have strength rather than just pure power. Plus how many people can say they can do a muscle up vs being able to bench a lot? š
Definitely! Also human flag and planche and so forth. I look at it sometimes in terms of survival.
Like if I'm with Brian Shaw and we're attacked by a grizzly bear while unarmed, I'm so impressed by their strength but I think I have the better chance to survive. š
Of course if a tree fell on us, then I think Brian Shaw would have the edge there being able to bench the entire tree off of him while I'd probably be squashed like a bug. But overall, I think the calisthenics type of body is more well-rounded against the widest variety of scenarios.
Agreed
Plus I don't REALLY need a gym. Going to a gym just helps me stay motivated and get on a bunch of machines
I graduated high school at 210lbs. And I'm bigger then your avg. Dude at 6'5" so I've never been avg. since I was a child.
I think we are slowly engineering activity out of society. I'm not saying we as a society are going to end up as the humans in their "floaty chairs" from the movie WALL-E. Because I think society has already began to make strides to reverse this trend. But I do think we as a society will continue to make our life easier and user friendly. So we as a society have to continue to make overall good health a priority.

Iām surprised but Iām not, haha.
Iām surprised in the sense that Iām always a little surprised when I hear weights of smaller guys. Even fit people, like lighter weight classes in MMA or boxingā¦. Iāll be like āthis dude is strong lookingā¦how is he only 135?ā I also come from a football background, so in that world, 197 pounds is LIGHT, MAYBE a defensive back or wide receiver can get away with that. But on a football field, itās a safe bet that of the 22 guys out there, probably 16-18 will over 200 pounds, and like 8 or 9 will be getting up in the 300 pound range, maybe over. Not even the kicker is 135 pounds, haha.
But in the everyday world, I have a hard time guessing peopleās weight. I think I overestimate the amount of tall people too. So Iād have a tough time guessing an average.
Iām not surprised in the sense that the average person doesnāt have a dedicated lifestyle towards fitness and diet. Lots of people go to the gym, but even out of them, few people truly commit to the full program with for-nutrition-not-for-taste diets and all that. Hard to do working full time or raising a family, etc, so I say that with no venom, just as an non-judgemental observation. 197 definitely feels higher than it should be though, unless average height is taller than I expect. Iām 194 as of today, got a little winter weight on me, Iām usually closer to 185. But Iām 6ā2 and I have a pretty good gym routine and diet. So if average was 5ā10 (donāt know if it is), I feel like the average weight should be lighter, but totally believe that it isnāt, haha. But maybe I should be heavier, I donāt know😂
Weight is something you can control- or at least, something you have far more control over than genetics or environment. This has lead to decades of overhyping the importance of not being fat, and as with any naked emperor, it's going to fall flat when people realize they've been lied to. That it's not actually good for your health to weigh more than a gorilla doesn't mean much in a time and place where subtlety and acknowledgement of complexity has died. And speaking of which...
Nowadays, with booming inflation pushing people more and more on to calorie-rich, vitamin-poor foods, after the medical industry flushed its integrity and reputation down the toilet, it's hardly surprising.
If there's an upside, it's that this is a fantastic time to invest in companies making diabetic-friendly products. There's going to be an ENORMOUS boom in their population over the next decade or so.
Yes, it's disgusting. I looked it up once and if I remember right something like 85% of Americans are overweight or obese. Our entire modern culture is endless consumerism driven by hedonism.
I was there. Moved to Seattle and started walking to work -- only a mile each way, about a 300' elevation change. Dropped 20 pounds in the first year and another 20 since.
My husband actually weighs quite close to this figure (197 lbs) and he is most certainly not overweight for his height of 6' 3" and keeps himself remarkably fit and healthy.
197 for 6'3" is fine
100,000 years ago, our diets had not sugar and very low carbs. We are not genetically adapted to eat all these carbs. The addict the brain. Food companies put some form sugar in everything.
I'm 200 pounds
but I am definitely not the average body nor obese...
it's about how you're actually built... lol
but also yes... North America is obese AF
but that's not the worst of it... even among the less heavy, then nutritional value of diets is awful AF...
I dont base obesity on pounds nor BMI. I look at the different features of the body. I know some good lookin 197 pound guys. Could be muscle and height factoring into that
I weigh maybe 140 have weighed the same for almost 20 years despite shoveling down 8k+ calories a day
When I see people at the beach I really do not see any people who are in shape. This does not surprise me.
Does not mean much. I weigh about 195. I'm 6'2 and my body fat % is under 10.
