Is it normal to just have a nosebleed out of nowhere without any known injury inside the nostril?

A number of things can cause nosebleeds. It is usually nothing serious.

I was never prone to nosebleeds but I had minor ones a few times as a kid.

I went for decades without having any. Then, about a year ago, I went to the bathroom to brush my teeth before bed at 2:00 am and blood started dripping in the sink. Soon the blood was flowing from my left nostril like a faucet. It was backing up into my throat and out of both nostrils. I was spitting blood. No matter what I did, it wouldn't stop. I thought I was going to bleed out.
After a couple of hours, my wife came in to see what I was doing. She wound up driving me to the emergency room. They gave me a clip to close off my nostrils. They also shoved an inflatable plug thing up my left nostril.
The plug thing fell out after one day. I even went to an ENT doctor a couple days later but he didn't seem concerned and said it would eventually stop.
My nose kept bleeding on and off for days and I slept sitting up in a chair.
One day I sneezed and a huge clot of blood came out but my nose didn't bleed anymore. It hasn't bled since.
It was the most bizarre thing. I had done nothing to cause it. Doctors had no explanation.

That was after my nose bled like a faucet for 4 hours until the ER plugged it up, and then bled a lot off and on for 4 more days and nights.
When I sneezed out that blood clot, I expected my nose to bleed like a faucet again and was surprised that it didn't.

It sucks but it’s not usually an emergency. Maybe the air was dryer than usual?

Hmmm well i probably wouldn’t worry about it and just chalk it off as an odd occurrence but if you’re a bit concerned maybe see a doctor about it to be sure? My honest thoughts here.

Lack of sleep can, surprisingly, also contribute to drying and hence nosebleeds.

I used to get them often as a kid. But yes you can get them from the air being dry or blowing your nose a little too hard…. Or sneezing… Or hay fever. I sometimes get small nose bleeds when pollen decides to attack me.

Yes, sometimes what i had a cold or if it got dry my nose would bleed. I got elbowed in the nose once and i could not get it to stop bleeding. I had to have my nose cauterized. I do not think i have had a nose bleed since then.

I used to get them all the time when I was younger. The doctor said that the blood vessels in my nose were very close to the surface. Eventually they went away.

Assuming you have normal clotting and blood pressure, which are both fairly easy to observe roughly yourself or you can get blood tests if you like numbers, then it's just one of those things you live with.

For an older adult, it is not normal. Probably means they have high blood pressure.
