My boy has autism. I treat him like a normal child teaching the difference between right and wrong. Taught him all the same stuff as any normal boy should learn such as to swim, ride a bike, football, soccer, basketball, boxing, mathematics, science, reading, writing, manners, morality etc and he's flourished.
Compare that to some of the other kids in his special needs class at school whos bad behaviour is ignored and encouraged by their parents because they have autism. Just hand them the tablet, the cookies and the soda pop.
there's a fat kid in my kid's class that likes to hit everyone. One day I got called into school because hed been hitting my son yet again but this time my kid now 11 who has been learning boxing knocked the crap out of him. They tried to put it on me teaching my kid to box but like I said its for self defence and the other kid attacked him yet again as they admitted. The other parents were irate threatening to call cops and demanding action from the school. I was like my son did right and if he lifts his hands to my son again my son will do the same and I advised the parents to teach their boy manners. The father actually threatened me, i just calmly invited him to step up, he backed down. That kid continues to hit other kids and teachers but never hit my son since.
As someone who does have a high functioning child with autism, I assure you it still has it's difficulties. Yes, I agree that each level has it's own progressively worse issues, but that doesn't mean it is just easy to deal with.
My son has issues with his food, it can't touch, he only wants to eat the same things, he has touch aversion to certain clothing, he has difficulty processing certain emotions, he is very black and white logic, you have to approach him in certain ways when he does things wrong, just to name a few.
Simply dismissing it doesn't do justice to those of us who do deal with it on a daily basis.
I agree it is not going to be a huge struggle based on level of autism. I had an autistic friend in grade school. She was high functioning. Her only issue was really large social things that she had trouble handling.
She went on to go to college like most of us did.
Disagree. Even mild autism/asperger's can already cause a lot of problems. They will struggle socially and probably will be bullied and put aside.
I agree. Many people with autism function just fine. It depends on the severity how much care they need outside what they can provide themselves.
I don't think you can imagine how stressful it is for a parent to have a disabled child until it happens to you.
You can't blame every little minor personal flaw on autism.
