So I work for a kid with severe autism. He doesn't speak and almost NEVER give eye contact. But yesterday when we were walking he stopped and looked me intsensely in my eyes for a good 5 seconds. And I just said "hi hi" very lighly and smiled and he smiled back and started walking. Is that good or no?
And sometimes he will stop and just hold both of my hands and breath.
I'm asking cause I know austistic people dont show the same as most people do.
Please only answer if you are sure not if you just have experience with working with autism. I have years of experience with autism too but not on a doctorate level

That is good, you are safe as may some call it. Every person with autism shows affection in their own way. A smile 😊 is always a good sign. Find what they like to do and have a slight approach, if it's coloring, video games, legos or anything, just yry to join them and always ask before you do anything (boundries).
Thank you for the tip I will do that!:)
My nephew has Autism and my niece has a form of Autism. My niece is completely non verbal while my nephew can say a few words like no.
Him smiling is definitely a good thing. It's even a good thing that he will hold your hand as well. It means he feels safe with you and he can sense you are a good person.
Okay thats good to hear. Thank you!
Wish your niece and nephew a happy, safe life!:)
Thank you and you're welcome. Keep doing whatever you are. It working with this little boy and you are doing really good
Okay will do! Thank you!
I have high functioning autism so I don't have much insight into your client's condition. However it does sound like he is becoming comfortable with you being around. Part of autism is extreme wariness in new situations or around new people.
Alright thats good to hear thank you!
Hope you are doing great!
You're welcome, you too!
Thank you!
