Thoughts On Self Diagnosed Autistic People?

They self diagnose because they know something is different about other people, and the world about them, and think that autism is the answer.

Chances are they have struggled throughout their lives to fit in and are used to medical professionals, educators, and laymen telling them that there is nothing wrong with them - they don't look disabled, while treating them as odd and weird and sometimes threatening.

It is extremely stressful to do this.

People often find it difficult and expensive to get a professional diagnosis from a suitable expert. It manifests differently in most people as a collection of co-morbidities and age and sex are factors.

The medical profession has been struggling to keep up with the latest learning since the early nineties. Professionals typically say they know this stuff while exhibiting limited or outdated knowledge.

It is extremely stressful to live like this which in and of itself can provide yet more problems such as depression and blow outs.

So yes, I'm sure there are those who have misdiagnosed themselves or perhaps are using it as an excuse for their own shirty behaviours.

But many more are just trying to understand their unique tolerances and find better ways to deal with the other often indifferent, sometimes intolerant, humans.

Not sure anyone can Self Diagnose any such thing. Although Autism is a spectrum ranging from someone too disabled to even talk to people who just have social issues.

Many of whom would have been regarded as perfectly normal just 60 years ago. It may be that said 'autistic' individuals are simply a common varrent of human not as socially adapt as most expect.

It gets on my nerves. Nowadays, everyone seems to be self-diagnosing with autism, depression, anxiety, OCD, and other conditions. No, you don't have OCD just because you like things neat and tidy. And no, you’re not autistic just because you’re socially awkward or prefer your own company. I think it's disrespectful to those who genuinely live with these conditions, as it downplays their experiences and struggles.

Yeah, it's a problem. Generally most people that say they are "on the spectrum" are just a**holes that don't want to take responsibility for understanding how to interact with people like adults. So instead of learning to read people. To learn to read and understand non-verbal communication when they're in person. They just claim that they're autistic and can't.

We've reached a new low as society. When I was younger people wouldn't want to labeled mentally handicapped in any way. These is how lazy and selfish society has become.

Self diagnosis is notoriously unreliable; however, if anyone could realistically pull it off, it would be autistic individuals. For myself, every test I took, except one (whose methodology I question [it gave you the answers and the reason for the answers as you took the test {a poor score indicated autism}]), indicated that I was neurodivergent. For autism, I would consider if it makes sense if they are self diagnosed, whether they are or not. Honestly it is only a social disorder; so it only helps you understand their personality better, if true.

I self-diagnosed age 42, had to pay for a private clinical diagnosis age 46 because NHS would pay for it, luckily I could afford it, many can't but are not dysfunctional enough to get dx on NHS,,, so yes imho sdx is valid if done so with integrity,,,
