Is it okay to self-diagnose Autism?

No it's not.

I have autism and it's not something you would want to live with.

It's not something cool and it's not something that you would want.
I would rather just be smart than to have autism.

Half of those with autism cannot talk and even if you have High functioning autism and can talk, you go through a lot of issues in life.

The DSM has updated their diagnostic criteria and became more strict in diagnosing autism. Asperger's is no longer a disorder. It's now High functioning autism, which is what I have.

Yes we have many gifts like increased intelligence in certain areas, but it usually means nothing if you have difficulty with basic street smarts and socializing with others.

It is NEVER okay to self-diagnose ANYTHING. You need to see professionals to get a proper diagnose.

What's the point? Example, I am 47, and at 37 I was diagnosed with a rare genetic connective tissue disease called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. With that comes autistic traits. I suspect that I am neuro-divergent as the world likes to call autism today. Obviously, I am really high functioning and it would serve no purpose to get properly diagnosed. However, if you are young It would be beneficial to get professionally diagnosed.
