I got my first guitar when I was eleven and took some lessons. It was a year after the Beatles released their first album in the U. S.
A year later, I got my first electric guitar.
When I was about 13 (and still very much a kid), there was a talent show at a local park. I talked a couple friends into standing behind me with electric guitars for moral support and to look like we were a band. They weren't even plugged in.

I played my electric guitar and sang two songs.

When I got up on stage I was soooo nervous that my chin was twitching.

There was one other band. They actually weren't bad. But I came home with a second place ribbon because I was the only other musical contestant. ROFL

I was in Gymnastics & swim comps but that’s not really a talent show. I played some musical instruments Bach & Mozart— I know, very original 😂 — when I was 6-7. Clarinet, Sax, Alto recorder.

No I did not win bc classical music in traditional instruments is not sexy 😛. The dancers always win…. Not saying I _should_ have one just saying there was never a chance. I was good tho 🤷🏻‍♀️

School & camp & community events.

My ggm was a music & philosophy prof. All her friends were musicians. There was must’ve & instruments everywhere, I just grabbed stuff and followed suite.. when in Rome.

And yes I was extremely drawn to wind instruments.. now I very much eyes to play violin and classical guitar. I couldn’t imagine anything other than wind back then bc wind made sense physiologically to me…as natural as breathing & as you breathe you make music it’s basically part of you.

But I can think outside thanks box now 😂

I did a few while in school, both in grade school and in university. Always music contests on flute, and a couple of times playing guitar. It was always fun. I love being on stage and performing for an audience, it's really one of life's greatest pleasures for me.

It IS fulfilling, isn't it? A total rush.

It is! It's all endorphins, oxytocin, dopamine, etc. My husband is a pianist and we used to play a lot of weddings together, even before we were married ourselves. Haven't played a wedding in about a year, but it was a lot of fun. I sometimes wonder where the couples from way back when we started 10-12 years ago are, and how they're doing, haha.

But I also understand the nerves and hesitation. I was that way once too. Wondering what people would think, would I be laughed off the stage, would I do something embarrassing? Trust me, I've had my share of embarrassing moments in the spotlight.

I agree about the rush. And if feels amazing when the audience loves it.

I've been in bands and done a lot of performances. I'm always a bit nervous ahead of time. But I think that just gets you pumped up and makes you sharp. I've heard of top professionals who perform every night who practically vomit from nerves before every performance, but then they are immediately at home once they are on stage before the audience.

And yeah, everybody makes mistakes. But if you handle them correctly, the audience doesn't even notice. You can make it seem like an awesome ad lib or simply treat it with humor. Never crash and burn.

My daughter sang Tomorrow from Annie when she was 9 in 4th grade in her school.
she also sang the stars bangle banner in her 8th grade graduation.
