As long as you don't hate each other's music, I think with time you learn to like what the other listens to. It's normal, a matter of habit... and also because when you hear their type of music it makes you think of them...

Music can set the mood, but it's not a deal breaker if your tastes differ. In gaming, my boyfriend and I enjoy different game genres but still connect over our shared love for gaming. Similarly, with music, it's all about finding harmony in diversity and maybe discovering new favorites together! 🎶💕

1 yI had a very close female friend in the 80s and 90s. We got along great except for when it came to music. I was driving her to an errand and she reached for the radio button. Back then there were two popular radio stations in Chicago, B96 and Z95. Not surprisingly, they were in competition to get the most teenage listeners with artists like Oasis, Backstreet Boys and Foo Fighters. Before she reached the on/off button I said, "I'm not listening to B or Z anything." She crossed her arms with a huff.

1 yNo. It's sometimes better if it doesn't. Take people who enjoy going to concerts. If you both like the genre but only one of you enjoys going to concerts, then that would be a bummer for the person that wants to go. But, if your SO likes going to concerts of a genre you don't care for, then they can go knowing that you won't be missing out.
00 ReplyNot really , unless you are really into music and you surround your life with that music, like going to concerts and shows a lot , but if you don’t? It’s not that big of a deal , the bottom line you don’t have to like everything your partner likes

1 yNo, it really doesn't matter. It's nice to have some commonality, but not a complete match.
I like Broadway/movie music, which my wife doesn't really care for. She likes rap, which I don't care for. We both like pop music and oldies.
00 ReplyI have no partner and I listen to soundtrack from movie and anime so I guess it wouldn't match a lot of people

@ClassicDropout Anime song are the best ^^
No music is music music is beautiful and it doesn't matter what she would like I'm going to like it anyway because I love music
00 ReplyIt used to, but in hindsight it's very small. So now, not at all. We don't have to listen to music together in the dark, while it's raining outside 😆
00 ReplyIt depends how different it is.
I was fortunate that my wife and I shared much of our taste.10 ReplyIt's a plus and it could be fun to go to concerts/events together. It's not a requirement though.
00 ReplyIt is essential considering how much of my life revolves around music.

1 yMy partner is over weight and I’m very fit, my partner is younger and I’m older, my partner likes all the opposite things from what I like but we enjoy our company together and that’s what matters when your old like me
00 ReplyIf it’s tolerable, I guess, but it would be better if we shared the same music taste.

@alice55 I haven't even heard of the first guy. Well, you already know we listen to some of the same French songs. I mostly listen to Rock. Mostly Classic Rock, but all sub-genres of rock, honestly. And foreign music, mostly rock and folk, but some other stuff too. I was into reggae for a while, but not so much anymore, but I still like it. I'll listen to other stuff too if it's good, but those are the main ones.

I googled it. It's a whole band.
Really? That's never good. What bands did you listen to? I went through a Death Metal phase as a teen, but now I can't stand it. I mean, there are some songs I can listen to where they aren't roaring the entire time. And I like songs that are melodic. - 1 y
They make good song
Hollywood undead (favorite was Young) mostly, apocalyptica, likin park, courtesy call thousand foot krush, 30 seconds to mars hurricane and the others I don't remember I will list them later if I remember (I lost all my teenage song whenI changed phone so)
I still like the song but I hate feeling angry and it remind me of bad periods so I don't like to listen to it at all
I didn't really listen to bands usually just some songs from them that I got from anime AMV.
They was a song called Warsaw too I listened a lot to.
Three day grace
Skillet monster
I prefer melodic too but I kind of listen to everything dependng on my mood, I always like rap - 1 y
Looks like they play many different genres. I'll check them out later.
I only know Linkin Park. I've heard of 30 Seconds to Mars and Hollywood Undead, but can't recall any of their songs.
You had them on your phone? That sucks.
I kind of know what you mean. I was in a dark place when I was going through my death metal phase. I only listen to a few Linik Park songs because most of them are so depressing.
Which one? The only Warsaw song I know is by Joy Division
Three Days Grace I know 'cuz they play them on the radio, but I can't remember what songs they sing. "Monster" I know. They play it on the radio. That one's not that bad. Maybe the lyrics are dark, but the melody is upbeat. The funny thing is, that's supposed to be a Christian band XD
Me too, honestly.
I'm not a fan of rap.
by the way, I sent you something in PM
- 1 y
My Chemical Romance I know, but I don't listen to them. So many people make fun of them.
- 1 y
I guess I never really bothered to learn which genre they were so long as they liked it, one song I like now is Supernova from Ansel Elgort, I really like his voice.
Yes I had them all on my phone but anyway I didn't listen to them anymore so I don't really mind if i lost them
Yes those song are for when you feel bad not when you feel better, I feel like rap and pop are better now for my mood
I don't know the actual name of the song but it talked about warsaw and was a polish song, I'm trying to find it back but the link of the video got private so I can't send it to you
I never actually listened to the lyrics just the melody
what a weird things XD
I quite like it personally I listen to it since I'm a child basically rap as a child was I was in a good mood, rock // metal bad mood and comeback to rap now when in good mood
I will look it - 1 y
Why do they make fun of them? in France they're not know at all and it was our favorite bands as teenager with my sister
I don't like it but honestly since then I really can't listen to metal anymore it kind of triggers me as I listened to it when I was extremely depressive, majority of stuff I enjoyed during this time I just can't go into it anymore even the clothes I used to wore I can't see them anymore, shoes, etc... It trigger me - 1 y
Yeah, I never realized how sub genres there are
I'll check it later
Yeah, plus that's something you can always get back
Oh, there's another one about the war in Warsaw by Sabaton, but I don't know any "Polish" songs about Warsaw. It's in Polish?
I'll listen to this kind of rap, but in general it's not my favorite

Yeah. It's mostly a band for teenagers. They were a thing when I was in middle school, but now not so much. But in my school the girls were all obsessed with Green Day and Fall Out Boy, but mostly Green Day. Green Day is actually a good band but I felt awkward listening to them because it seemed only girls listened to them because they all had a crush on the lead singer.
I also listened to a lot of punk rock. I only recently got back into it, but I don't listen to it as much as before. There was always a rivalry between punk and metal fans. You were either supposed to like one or the other.
I know what you mean honestly. I experience that too, but mostly with other things. And I don't wanna trigger you, but not all metal sounds the same.
Damn. I'm sorry. I've gone through many phases of depression too
- 1 y
Sounds like you mean "spadał". It's means "he fell", but I need a lot more. I'm surprised I've never heard of such a song.
Yeah, German.
Somewhat, I'm not going to listen to any of that new style new country or what they pass off as rap or hip hop these days
