Why is it hood/trunk in the US and bonnet/boot in the UK?

It's interesting how these terms differ - I wonder which came first.

A bonnet is a cloth head covering used by ladies, the word is of French origin and the English do like to borrow French words into their language. As for trunk that's not a common English word unless your talking of tree trunks, or elephant's. The box type would be a chest. Since you wear a bonnet on your head and boots at your feet we went down that route.

Language development runs in parallel with enough distance between countries. Much like Portugal’s and Brazil‘s Portuguese or the German spoken in Texas.

Because we americans fixed the dumb British words with better descriptions, a hood covers, but nobody wears bonnets anymore. A boot is for feet , so we fixed it a trunk holds stuff including the travel trunk itself!
