Does this guy sound rude?

My mom is a teacher at an elementary school. The staff is doing secret Santa. There is this new 5th grade teacher. he's in his 20s. My mom got him for secret Santa, so she's been buying him gifs. Everyone would submit what they liked. He said sports, so my mom has been getting him sports related gifts. So she got him one of those foam basketballs. She saw him in the hall, and said "here" and tossed it to him. She expected him to say something along the lines of "oh you're my secret Santa?" But he was just like "oh ok" then walked away. I think he sounds awkward and rude. What do you think?

Perhaps he's on the spectrum... or perhaps he doesn't celebrate Christmas? I had a coworker who accepted a Christmas gift from his boss bc he was afraid to reject it... it was a magnetic Christmas wreath the boss' kid had made. My coworker isn't Christian, though, and was upset by the gift but kept it on his desk anyway.
