Is this rude? Why would he say things like this?

My stepfather always seems to have something rude to say. I know if I said the same things back to him, it would be unacceptable so I don't know why it's okay that he says these things. The most recent example, I have a new boyfriend and my boyfriend met my family. My stepfather then said in front of everyone including my new boyfriend and directed to me, that my boyfriend is better looking than me and out of my league.

Like why would he feel the need to say that out loud? What should I reply when he says rude things, shall I call him out?

Yes, it's definitely rude and uncalled for. FYI, the only people who tend to say things like this are either a) unempathetic people and/or b) very insecure people. I've never seen a confident person engage in behaviour like that. I'd wager a bet that your "stepdad" is insecure and therefore needs to tear others down. I'd greatly reduce my time spent around him if I were you. You don't need to put up with that BS.

Your boyfriend and you are clearly good enough for each other if y'all are going out. Your dad is trying to get under your skin by doing that. Your rational response is to refuse to be in his company. Did you talk to your boyfriend about this? He should have said something to his obnoxious father. For now, it's reasonable for you to refuse his father's company. If your boyfriend is visiting his parents, don't go. If your boyfriend can't understand why you are upset, then dump him.

Ignore him. Don't respond. He's either ignorant (and you responding won't change anything) or he's trying to piss you off. Ignoring him and not responding will either stop it or not. But you haven't given him any satisfaction.
