Why do people think stay home moms are still realistic?

The cost of living drastically increased over the past two decades , as our wages Stayed almost the same. While millennials are the most educated generation , A majority of then are unable to buy a home. Most families in the Us are Currently living paycheck to paycheck With Little to no savings!

so what on earth are people thinking that stay home moms are still realistic? Your family wouldn’t be able to survive without your wife’s income.

Think about what your kids will miss out on:
refusing your sons acceptance to a great college because you couldn’t afford to pay the tuition. Denying your child the karate class Or camp that he was So jealous of seeing all his classmates attend. Denying your child necessities such as academic tutoring if needed. can't buy the latest video games , laptop upgrades, cool sneakers that he’s always wanted, not being able to afford to feed your kids meat because it’s too expensive, using a smartphone that is too old slow and outdated.

I grew up with this kinda childhood and honestly it sucks. Money is Very much necessary to providing kids an adequate childhood.

I never had any electronics other than a few cheap flip phones all throughout childhood. There were times when I was forced to walk 10 miles to and from school just cus my parents didn’t want to spend money on 2 bus tickets. I also ended up rejecting an acceptance to an amazing college because There was no way my parents could afford paying the tuition. They also had my brothers tuition to pay for

The quality of a childhood is not based on how much it costs; it's based on how involved you are to provide your kids with opportunities to discover themselves, grow, develop the confidence to think, communicate and believe in themselves, so they can become the people they see as worthwhile and productive.

I once did volunteer work at a girls' home. I found it odd they did the same activities every week. I questioned the administrator, and she told me it wasn't in their budget. I asked her if she'd provide transportation if I could come up with free or low-cost activities. She agreed, so every week I had these girls experience new things. They'd grumble on the way to the activity, as they never heard of it before, but it was often hard to get them to leave after they had experienced it.

I didn't have a lot of extra disposable income, but my son's life was filled with more experiences than most of his more affluent peers. When he was in the 10th grade, his teachers said the students had to pick a career and a college. He couldn't relate to how overwhelmed his peers were, as he already had a clear picture of the path he was on, even if he didn't know exactly where he'd end up.

As far as stay-at-home moms go, that often isn't in the best interest of the kids or the moms. Kids will see her as living for the kids and having no life of her own. They'll figure whatever she is teaching them didn't work for her, so they let it go in one ear and out the other. A person's self-esteem is based on challenging oneself and gaining a sense of accomplishment. Stay-at-home moms just keep repeating the same chores over and over. When they finish, it's just time to start again. They never get the opportunity to have a real sense of accomplishment. You may say raising kids is a huge accomplishment. That may be true, but you have to wait 18 years to determine if you were successful or not, and that is usually too long a time to keep self-esteem from diminishing. She may pressure her partner to make her feel whole and important, but that only results in pushing her partner away, as nothing the partner does can be more than just a momentary bandaid, and her insatiability just drags him down into the quicksand.

Reasons men might want their wives to stay at home might be a need to prove he can support a family, or he may fear someone will win her away from him, or she might see all the areas he may be lacking if she experiences interactions with other men.

Stay home moms don’t tend to be educated either. Educated women tend to work careers. Another big risk is : what will happen to the stay home mom if her husband divorces her? How is she gonna survive on a minimum wage job?

It is true that both men and women suffer during and after a divorce or death when one does nothing to prepare for the possibility of needing to support self and family. There are educated women who still feel drawn into the belief they'd be selfish and uncaring toward their kids if they didn't become stay-at-home moms. There are a lot of working women who feel guilty for not being there for their kids. They often heap money on their kids to counteract their guilt for not giving their kids the time they feel they deserve. Quality time will always be more valuable than quality money.

Parents do not owe their kids a college education. I paid for my degrees, and my son paid for his. In college, I noticed the individuals who had their costs paid for tended to be the ones who were less invested in their education and more invested in their experience (partying).

Yes, there is a price people pay for stay-at-home moms, but I sense you are putting too much priority on money and ignoring what is truly important when it comes to the role of parent. It's not about providing them material goods and teaching them right from wrong and guiding them through life. It's about providing them with a stable basis upon which to grow, a good role model, opening their eyes so they can discover cause and effect and what makes sense to them, so they can eventually believe in themselves and stand on their own two feet as functioning, productive, worthwhile adults. I understand you're young and inexperienced, but I hope your perspective can eventually be broadened beyond money.

And what makes you think that just cus mom is working then she can’t teach her kids good values? Both my parents worked 9-5 jobs and they still managed to be able to tutor me on home work , taught me how to ride bikes, attended parent teacher conferences , tracked my school progress, taught me right from wrong. Parents come home to spend time with kids at the end of every night. Just cus mom works a job, it doesn’t mean she is completely absent from kids lives. There is no way an 18 yr old with no credit history would be able to pay for all 4 years of college. Unless you’re attending a community college where tuition is just 2000 a year. It sounds like we're having two completely different conversations. I don't promote stay-at-home moms, and I don't believe a parent is a good parent just because he/she makes a good income. You seem to be associating everything with money, just because you didn't have what others had. I was 50 when my son and I built our first computer. I was nearly 60 before I got my first cell phone, and it wasn't a smart phone. When I was a kid I wanted to go to summer camp, so I sold light bulbs door to door. Financial aid is available to students with financial needs. My son still has a few years left before his student debts are paid off. He could pay them off now, but he's making more money from his investments than the interest charged for the loans.

Don't play the victim because you didn't get the handouts you felt entitled to. I got no handouts. My son got no handouts. My son paid 100% of his college costs. Actually, he didn't pay for his masters degree, as the college was so impressed with his accomplishments they gave him a full-ride scholarship, a paid teaching position and a paid research position. We both made sure we were educated and have made something of ourselves, not because it was handed to us on a silver platter, but because we set out with a goal and kept working at it till we achieved it. I get tired of hearing people complain and blame others because the handouts they felt entitled to never came to fruition.

We all have the ability or have the ability to acquire the ability. It's easy to blame others when we fail to take action to move us forward. Everything my son or I have we've acquired on our own. You'll never move forward by constantly looking at the past. Yes, we want to learn from our past, but let's bring the knowledge forward and leave the pain in the past. Stop focusing on your sense of entitlement and start making a life for yourself.

By the way, I have what I have because I chose to learn how to create or maintain it on my own. When I got my first car, I refused to let a mechanic work on it if he wasn't willing to let me observe and learn. I've done most of the maintenance and repair of my vehicles. There is no way I could have bought the house I have, so I chose to design and build it myself. I also maintain it on my own. If I can't afford something, I make do with what I have. Appreciating and making the most of what you have is much more fulfilling than sitting around focusing on what you believe you could or should have.

The dean of the college where he did his undergrad work saw him in action, offering him the scholarship based on his actions, not his grades.

Usually, an employer wants someone with a degree to show they are capable of taking on a challenging task, requiring a significant amount of time, and follow through to completion. They don't want to waste their time and money on someone who won't stick around when the going gets tough. They often don't care what the degree is in. When I entered the USAF to be a pilot, my required degree was in theater arts. My son wanted to transfer to a different division within his company, the company that hired him as a freshman in college. He impressed the vice president of that other division by winning a company-wide competition. The VP asked him to apply to a particular department, but, after applying, my son was told they only hire people who graduated from Carnegie Mellon. Now, the people in that department seek out my son for his perspective and expertise.
There are many options available to people. Most don't bother to research to discover what those options are. Most of our limitations are created in our own head.

Whether or not it is doable is less the point. It is what the couple prefers for them and the outside world not dictating their perspectives and values open said couple. Both single income and two incomes families figure it out and from what I have seen of each, both still face the same hurdles regardless of level of income. That is “your” perspective. Further, you are expressly pointing to the mother being the one remaining at home where I clearly observed this is not the common reality in my area, as it is the husbands who are staying home. Here’s where perspective gets deeper. In my ‘area’, both intelligence and affluence tend to go a bit more hand in hand, so scholarships and grants are equally plentiful. Again, it os a matter of perspective … and observation. Children are doing quite well in my literal neck of the woods. Interestingly my mountain has upon it one of the most prestigious private schools which most local children attend … and there are a lot of single income families here. I realize my observations are not the norm but this does invalidate your assertion that two incomes are an absolute. Perhaps in your area, but not in all and clearly not if people live within their means which is an entirely different subject. I mean, I equally know plenty of two income families drowning in debt who may earn a lot more than a single income family yet spend significantly more as well this leaving them worse off. Which is a variable couples must explore regardless of number of earns to a household as opportunity is equally reduced if expenditure/debt strips it from the couple.

I am a stay-at-home mom. I also have a college education.

Now... We have made a lot of sacrifices for me to stay home. My kids missed out on some things when money was tight. I drove the same car for 15 years so we wouldn't have a car payment and we lived in a very modest house without a bunch of luxuries.

Here's what my kids did have (and still do);
2 parents at the dinner table with them every night (vs family members strolling in and out between their over booked schedules.
A mom who helped in their classrooms and led their troops.
Someone to pack their lunches and make their breakfast.
They had a ride to and from school and didn't have to ride the school bus (which is where a lot of inappropriate behavior goes on that they weren't exposed to).
They learned that the world doesn't revolve around them or their desires. Instead, their world revolves around family.
They had a mom to pick them up of they were sick, go to every game, get them practice. We volunteered as a family for lots of events and sadly, we were often 1 of 2 family units.
They had lots of day trips and camping trips. We could go when we wanted to (no need to schedule that single week in the year for a family vacation).
It seems like families are living their lives individually now and it's all about bragging rights on social media platforms.

My kids are all HS and college now. It's summer and everyone is home WANTING to be together. Life is good!

We made a lot of financial sacrifices. There were many activities that we couldn't afford and vacations we didn't take. It was hard for our kids to understand why they had never been to Disney World when it seemed like "all the other kids" had been at least once a year. My kids didn't wear Hollister clothing. We shared one computer. No PlayStation. We lived frugaly. It wasn't easy, trust me... there were tears. However, we feel it was worth it and my kids have actually thanked me now that they are older (high school mind you, which is impressive to me).

I live in NYC and I was raised by two parents who worked full time. They tutored me on home work , taught me how to ride a bike, taught me right from wrong, taught me how to be polite. Reality is Most mothers in this country work Full time. Both husband and wife working and yet 2/3 of all families are still living paycheck to paycheck. Both husband and wife worked their entire lives still have to pull out loans for their kids to attend college.

And reality is, stay home moms do absolutely nothing most of the time while the kids are at school. Life becomes even more free when the kids are older. Stay home mom is only a full time job when the kids are young. By the time kids hit 10 and older, the role becomes a complete joke.

Back then during hte 1920s, stay home moms was a full time job. Clothes had to be washed, sewed by hand. Bread was made by hand. Ice cream was made by hand. Dishes had to be washed by hand, Meals had to be cooked from absolute scratch. Cheese and butter had to be made by hand. Water had to be carried from a mile away.

Nowadays, vacuums, washing machines, dryers really reduces your workload. You don't have to sew your own clothes, make your own bread / butter. You're really just free most of the time you stay at home. This is what makes it so shocking that some people can be this lazy.

I don't have anything against stay home moms. If you can afford to be a stay home mom because your husband can sufficiently provide for the family , then thats great.

But its morally incorrect to be starving your children of necessities just so that you can stay home and do almost nothing most of the time. Kids really do not need 24/7 around the clock care as they get older. There are tons of parents who managed to raise their kids fine parenting while working 2 jobs.

I'm a stay at home mom and it is very realistic for our family financial wise. If I had to work then my whole paycheck would go towards childcare expenses. And it's also healthier for a child to be raised by their mothers instead of a daycare. Moms who have 1-2 kids can get away with the daycare bullshit and maybe find some time with them on weekends but having 3+ kids with that lifestyle wouldn't work out.

I'm glad I grew up before the internet. My family didn't have a car because we couldn't afford one. We used public transport. We had no savings, living paycheck to paycheck. I had a GREAT childhood. There was no such thing as minimum wage.

Blue collar jobs weren't "popular" they were available because nobody wanted them - just like now.

Nowadays software engineering is still far from a "typical" job. Under 30% of the workforce globally has tertiary education or higher. I know several software developers - none did a degree in software engineering.

My first job was in McDonald's flipping burgers. I was 31 when I started university. I had experience in the world - something you clearly lack - and was already working as a medical practice manager. I decided to get the degree in strategic business management for the sake of my CV, not because I believed I needed it. I studied part time alongside my job. That's college for 6 hours a day, 3 days a week AND pulling minimum 8 hour days at work 6 days a week.

I lived through life pre-minimum wage. In the middle of the second winter I spent in that shack I had to choose between food and electricity for light & the single 1kw heater I'd bought. THERE WAS NO MINIMUM WAGE. I earned £50 a week. My rent was £40 a week. For a year that was what I lived on. £10 a week for food, electricity, petrol to get to work. Life today with minimum wage laws and improved welfare is way easier than I had it. Prices have gone up, but income has risen faster. And I'm talking about 1991.

I'm not American. Thank God. I'm English. I live in South Africa. Indulge me for a moment.

In this country (SA), average income per household is around 25% of the American minimum wage. I have a friend who earns R4000 per month.
That's around £200 or $250.
Bread is around $1.80 a loaf. After rent, school fees & transport she has $1.50 a week for food.

If you calculate average buying power of most major currencies over the last 40 years by adjusting buying power to current currency values then while some commodities have increased ahead of the curve, the average basket of groceries actually costs less in real terms in most western countries. What has changed is that little children from the millennial generation have no fuckibg clue how to manage finances because they have been duped by advertising strategies into believing there are luxury items that are necessities and essential items that are no longer relevant. In turn this has led to the most fragile generation in 200 years who have a victim mentality and a combined IQ of 6.
