A dowry is a payment, such as property or money, paid by the bride's family to the groom or his family at the time of marriage.
The minimum dowry rate is Rs. 35 lacs for upper middle class families. It depends on the job of the groom.
In some cases, bride's parents help groom in setting up business, getting a job, buying a property, etc.
In rich families, the dowry rate goes upto crores.
Ex. Let's say you are commissioner of a district. You may get proposals from MP / minister's daughter.

It's archaic, unjust and unworthy for modern-day India. My Indian friends tell me, the pressure for dowries is slowly changing, though. Even if just for the increasing lack of unmarried females.

Yes, they all do it secretly. Though it's banned, illegal and it's a crime.
