Have lots of money saved. Be sure your salary can support a wife and children- if you are male. Have a skill that is useful for earning a good salary. Read up on understanding the opposite sex. Be healthy. Be sure you understand exactly what the marriage vows actually mean- “forsaking all others” is serious business to most people. Be sure you find your “future in-laws” responsible, respectable, clean, respectful, and hold similar beliefs as you. A lot I know but most people really do expect a marriage to be FOREVER- and THAT is much longer than you can imagine!
