No as we are adults with responsibilities if a family member had to go to the hospital but we had a date planned the date would be put on hold to complain about it would be selfish

Not possible, if you have family such as a Mum and Dad or siblings and they need you, then you should be there. People also need to work and some people's jobs require them to work at the drop of a hat.
