Parents want lavish wedding?

My fiancè (29m) and I (29f) are getting married next year. We both want a small wedding with 40 close friends, but my fiancè's parents want a lavish wedding with 400 guests and expect us to pay for it. I already raised the fact that we won't be able to afford it (due to our financial circumstance) but they insist on us having a large wedding. The bigger issue is that they want us to pay for it.

so. let me get this straight. who's wedding is it? who is getting married? who is in charge of invitations? who is paying? i'm guessing the answer to all of those questions is YOU and your partner. so, with that said, YOU are in control. smile and nod and don't say a word when they bring up these things.

I agree with the others, tell them no. It's YOUR wedding, not theirs. If they want a massive wedding, then they should pay for it.
