How much money should I spend on Valentines Day gift?

I have been dating him for a month now and he just asked me to be his girlfriend. Typically this would be too soon for me, however we both can't get enough of each other and it felt like a good choice for both of us!

We are spending valentines day together and I am absolutely not sure how much it is appropriate for me to spend on a gift for him.

Im 22 and in full time work but also a full time student. He makes 4 times the money i do as he is 25 and done with college.

I do have a good bit of savings, however he's been very kind and paying for most things when together.

I would love to get him something nice, however I am not sure what the appropriate gift or amount I should spend on it is. We are not together very long, so I do not want to get carried away and go overboard!

Any advice would be lovely.

This is a great question.

This one isn't about money. Focus on the right gift and the amount won't matter.

My general gift giving guide is this:

• make it something they use often/every day (that makes them think of you)
• make it something that shows you've observed a detail about them

If you can do something that you hand made -- it becomes precious and priceless and original -- a drawing or painting or something, is a great example.

But, make it about the gift not the amount.

That said, the right amount is what fits into your budget. Don't go into debt for love, if that makes sense. So if the bottle of whiskey that is the right gift is 40% more than you want to spend, get the same brand but in the smaller size.

I read somewhere that men don't like to receive gifts that only have sentimental value. Like women, they want stylish things. They want nice things like a perfume, a watch or sunglasses, or a jacket or a shirt, rather than scented letters or heart papers written in aesthetic lettering. Things they can use. You can get him a nice perfume which is not a fortune, maybe a shirt and put them in a box with a note. He would be excited to see what’s inside. You know when I think how would I feel like if a man only gifted me romantic love letters instead of usual gifts that my family and friends do, I would probably be bored too.
