How would you feel if someone gifted you a painting of yourself in a fine frame on your birthday?

Why would someone need a painting of themself?


I would be polite, but have no use for it. Better to have a painting of something the person likes.


In the 90's I was invited to a boys birthday party, think he was turning 12.. he loved jurassic Park. I gave him an up close image of a velociraptor framed poster. It was great.
Flash forward to another birthday party for a friends son leaving for college. I gave him a frame of artwork depicting the inside pieces of the millennium falcon in shiny metal. He declared "this is coming with me to school."
It's been years.
Both still have them.


Art means things to people. But nail the target audience by looking from their perspective.

I think for a woman it's a little different, it's maybe more acceptable

Overall though, it should be special and it might even be best to have an artist do it in real time. Maybe even do the both of you together in real time

And going back to being special, you should use at least a special picture of them, meaningful to them

I think it would be thoughtful, my husband and I went to a cartoonist who drew us both in a comically funny art style.

I wouldn’t be opposed to receiving a portrait of myself as a gift, although I do really love sweets and jewelry as well. 😅

I'd appreciate the gesture, but I would feel weird hanging it up. Someone put a lot of time and effort into it, but it's not like a family photo shoot, where I change out the pics or use them for holiday cards. I'd feel a bit narcissistic having a painting of myself on display in my home. Also, I'm extremely particular about art and just because something is painted doesn't make it artistic...

Happy and flattered but also a little awkward. A guy did paint my portrait once and it was sweet of him to ask to paint me -- he was very talented -- but it would have been awkward if he suddenly presented it to me rather than keeping it for his professional portfolio (which was the original intention).

Well i wasn't given a painting but printouts of my naked pics n stills from having sex were dropped through the mail box in my house and to my neighbours in whole street...

Ofcourse it was done by an ex who got utterly mad
