Did you ever give money or food to a homeless person who turned put to be more wealthier than you?

Reminds me when I gave money and food to a woman begging at the front of a store. When I got back out from the store, I saw her put on gold chain, a cool smart phone from her bag and a car came to pick her up. While I was 14 years old with an a phone with a broken screen and just 20-50$ a month in allowance. I was probably more poor than her in comparison 😂😂😂😂

Yeah, so that doesn’t mean she didn’t need the money. The reality is when it comes to this idea of “the poor and needy” we have a specific image in our heads of what that looks like and the reality doesn’t necessarily match up. There’s no reason to believe she wasn’t still homeless and couch-surfing at a friend’s house rather than slumming it in the street (which is INSANELY dangerous to do as a woman by the way) and that friend was picking her up. For all we know, that chain could be of a sentimental value to her and probably fake. And of course if you want to get a job, you need a phone. But if you saw any of that alongside her sign asking for money, you would have assumed she wasn’t homeless at all and she knew that. Much like countries who work with voluntourism to build schools, churches, and hospitals with funding and “work” by christian missionaries, they make sure to tell the kids to hide away their toys even though they are objectively worse off than the white missionaries from a richer country, they have to keep up the illusion that they’re much worse off than they are, otherwise the “volunteers” will feel like they’re being taken advantage of when the reality is they’re still impoverished, it just doesn’t look like it does in the movies. That women knew that and knew breaking the illusion would mean less people helping her when she needed it.

I once asked a beggar woman if she wanted to have a meal with me. Big mistake, I ended up becoming her friend and had to start buying her things. It turned out she had an apartment and her rent was higher than mine (though I lived alone and she shared it with her two sons).

Didn’t happen to me, but our press/media is full with stories of professional beggars and scammers. Quite a lot of them run by Gypsy families. 🤦‍♂️

Yeah, when I was a college kid sweating it out every summer at the local bookstore when contracted gigs ran low I was approached by a fellow who was "down on his luck" and needed cab fare home. I gave him metro fare and he got all snippy with me but accepted the metro card I gave him.

I remember somebody coming up to us saying that they need money for gas at the gas station ⛽️ they pointed to their empty car over there so we gave him money. The next thing we know he’s riding off on a bicycle
