Something with a steel shank and leather insoles... I personally like nicks but they're not cheap. And as a personal preference I like boots rather then shoes. I daily a pair of howard work boots.
I don't really know of any quality work shoes that aren't made from cloth, plastic, and foam; they're comfortable at first but need to be replaced after a couple hundred hours.
I'm sure they're some good work shoes out there but I've found what works for me and have no interest in suffering through the painful process of trying new things in this regard; don't fix what isn't broken and all that.
Also, big box brands are all garbage. Bar none. Mass manufacturing for the uninitiated. That was a hard lesson that took me years to learn. Sure, they're "affordable" but honestly, they're just down right hot garbage.
Three factors for me. They should be as light as I can get away with for the purpose. Casual vs protective vs steel toe requirement. Have good support, nice cushioning but not too soft (durability), and where possible lace up and cover the ankle (basketball high tops, Justin lacers). What I used to do was go to somplace like Ross that sells name brands cut rate and buy a $20-25 pair of Puma or similar basketball shoes knowing I'd be changing them out in a few months time. No shoe I've met stands up to all day for long. Based on 12 hr shifts on concrete.
Dr scholl are my go to for standing everyday.

The most comfortable shoes are usually sneakers - Adidas, Nike, Puma, Reebok, Vans, Converse, etc
I'm still looking. Shoes these days are really sad.
Skechers are the best.
