I donated to a charity that supposedly helped the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, Then I read that they hired a political hack that worked in the Mayors office to manage it. She got a nice 6 figure salary to go with the new job.

I am very suspicious of charities but I decided that the Jimmy Fund is on the level.

Except for an Indian school in South Dakota, the charities I donate to are local. There is a no-kill pet shelter/adoption center, a homeless shelter that helps people get back on their feet, and a food bank. I know for a fact what those charities spend their money on.

I give a few bucks occasionally to pro-second amendment organizations, Planned Parenthood, the Nature Conservancy and a few others.
But I generally don't trust large, national or international charities because they pay huge salaries to CEOs and officers, and only a fraction of donated money actually goes to their mission.

Yes. St Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis Tennessee.

I visited it several years ago and realized what a great job it does caring for children with cancer, at no cost to the families. I regularly donate to it and encourage others to do the same.

Besides the 5 people that lost their lives, there were many more that had disabling injuries. I really felt bad for them and gave a sizable donation. Then I hear tht not only did a political insider get to run the thing t a bloated salary but later it was found that many people that got money from the charity were not even at the Marathon that day..

Yes, for me it was two of them. One was Wigs For Kids which I would grow my hair out for a year or two, then donate it to them.

The other one I can't remember the name of but it was a charity for the research of Osteogenesis Imperfecta (basically brittle bone disease). My brother has it and although he will never see a cure for it in his lifetime, I am hoping some child who is born with it can find some way to get help with it in the future.

I will also from time to time donate to local battered women's shelters

I used to since college because I always worked so I donated to those that help children in Africa… that was a long time age. They started to send me name labels for mailing envelopes and mini calendars that I never had a use for. That’s when I stopped… because I really just wanted my money to go to the children like they say… I never asked for mailing labels or other stuff.
now hubby donate to local churches and volunteer in local food banks.
we also prefer just helping behind the scene anonymously.

Not one in particular, but i mostly donate time to animal rescues and shelters. I used to help out in homeless shelters and kitchens, but too many of them are prejudiced against men. Two-thirds of the homeless in the US are men, but there are no shelters just for men. If a man does get a bed, he’s kicked out as soon as a woman or a minor has need for it.
I stopped donating money because of the number of “charities” that draw exorbitant fees for their services. For example, The March of Dimes earned their name by infamously only spending about ten percent of their revenues on the people in need. For every dollar donated, the charity cases received a dime. That was a huge scandal back in the day.
It’s just easier to donate my time than it is to vet the organizations one by one. I also get a look at how they operate and can decide for myself if they are legitimate or not.

Shriners Hospital. I also donate to Make A Wish. All the money has been shown to go almost directly to those involved. I have a lot of friends that donate to McDonald's House! I actually know people that experienced it and say how wonderful it is. Something I'll definitely look into.

I’ve always dove into charitable work since I was a kid. Today I still participate in a few things, run a few things, and donate to organization I trust bc I’ve seen the nitty gritty aspects of their mission, goals and achievements, know the people in charge have good intentions, etc.

It’s tough to find charities that are set up in a way that makes it difficult to be taken advantage of by employees and beneficiaries. Some of my favorite are for veterans, meals on wheels, women’s shelters, coats for kids, or residential rehabilitation programs.
