I’ve had a few fish tanks for many years. Having a nice freshwater plant tank is almost the most difficult kind of aquarium to maintain, besides an exotic saltwater coral tank. It’s not for beginners or fish tank rookies, it’s not for lazy people, and it’s not cheap. You have to have only certain fish that don’t mess with the plants, dig them up, or eat them. You have to put special stuff in the bottom of the tank called aragonite and something else, not just gravel. You also need lights that aren’t cheap to make those plants grow, unless the tank is in the sun, but then you are going to have an algae problem. You need a lot of gas exchange to provide the plants with sufficient CO2, but that is usually caused by surface agitation and you can’t have strong current in a plant tank. If you get your live plants at a fish store they are going to be quite expensive, much more than you would think.
Thank you very much 😊 well, it's not for me!! An older friend said it's what she wants for her birthday next month... so i want to get her one... I think she knows how to manage one of this.. she said hers broke
@Staximus, I don't think it's that expensive 🤔 someone that owns the one in the picture said i could set it up around $1,000... that's cheap if it would do.. you think it runs for thousands?
It doesn’t matter if it’s a gift, use your brain. If she’s going kill all the plants then you’re just wasting a bunch of money. You don’t need to spend $1000 on a gift for a friend. That’s crazy and stupid unless you’re rich
@Staximus, you said you "had" them before.. that means you once liked them... she wants an aquarium with live plants 🪴 because that's her love for nature, I don't see why you criticise this on "killing"... and yes, "I'm rich"..
Whether I had them before or I have them now is irrelevant, smart guy. I had to move and the fish tanks couldn’t go with me. If you haven’t had aquariums then you have no idea what you’re talking about. I have had aquariums from 1989 to 2017, which is longer than you’ve been on this planet. If this person doesn’t know how to take care of a plant tank then you’re just blowing money out of your ass because the plants are all going to die
A plastic tank is a lot more expensive than a glass tank but almost unbreakable. Glass tanks are more clear and way harder to scratch, which comes in handy when moving the gravel around and planting plants. Glass tanks are not good around children or drunks. The tank needs to be on a stand that is designed for fish tanks. Not on a table, dresser, etc. water weighs 8.8 pounds per gallon and the glass and gravel is heavy, too. An earthquake strap should be used to strap the tank stand to a beam in the wall. A fish tank falling over is heavy enough to kill somebody. The top of the stand must be perfectly flat and the stand must be level or else the tank will crack and leak or burst.
I usually get mine from local hobbyists that focus on aquatic plants. Its a little more expensive but they last longer as they are matured for that environment. I will get some from pet stores but they tend to have tricks to have them heathy enough to sell. For your friend, if they dont have a Co2 setup you might want to get plants that are raised in a none C02 setup
It honestly depends of the fish. I have a mix because its a community tank But jungle val, Amazon swords, for my betas, java, ludwigia, moneyeort for tettras, , guppy grass for shrimps and snails, there are a few more but i forget their names
I used to just get plants at the store where I sometimes bought fish and take them home and plant them in the gravel that was on the bottom of my fish tank. Sometimes they would last and sometimes they would not.

You know this is going to cost hundreds of dollars, right?
Maybe you should go to the fish store and have them add everything up and then think about it

You’re gonna blow $1000 to somebody can kill a bunch of plants?
Was somebody wants and what they’re actually capable of managing are two different things
@Staximus it's a gift

@Staximus I told you "she had it, and it broke" she loves it so much and needs a replacement

@Staximus thank you so much for this tip ❤️ 🙏 I really appreciate it
We are just getting started here

Could you give me the names of the plants you use please?

Depending on where you live, you may be able to find them outdoors, and harvest a few of them responsibly.
I source this from the masters of the craft.
I had a coupleof fish tanks when my kids were little
Haven't ever done it
