Why do guys backpedal on what they say?

why would a guy tell you that he likes you, feels a connection towards you, etc then immediately backpedal on that? why bother to tell someone how you feel about them if you don't intend to see where it goes. I could see, maybe, a younger man getting nervous but not a grown man in his early 50's. I'd like some feedback on this especially from the men out there.

i guess being grown doesn't mean a guy can't be stupid and immature, huh? I'll live but I have to admit that I'm very disappointed in this guy. I thought that I had finally met one who had his sh*t together.
