Well in that situation it would be. I think it really depends on the job that they apply for. like I mean I am pretty sure dress codes for stewardess are pretty sexist I could be wrong and yes this being in America.
Actually, most of the blatantly sexist dress codes for female flight attendants have been made illegal in several countries, notably, the US. They can wear flat, supportive, comfortable foot wear, pants, skirts that are not overly immodest. You should have seen some of the get-ups flight attendants wore when I was a kid. Tiny mini skirts and go-go boots. And they could take your measurements and reject you if your figure was not hourglass and your waist was not below a certain measurement.
@MlleCake Oh okay i didn't know that thanks for telling me. But I still feel like they discriminate against your looks cause every female flight attended I have seen that worked for any American airlines was attractive or at the very least had an attractive body.

Yes it is, but hopefully the heels aren't too high as worn by the cabin crews. It's quite low. four or five centimetres.
High heels are unnecessary. Women should wear comfortable footwear but they should be decent and formal. That's it.
And stop saying men don't wear it and stuff. It's not about comparing your dress codes with men. It's about your damn health.
Except, it is partly about comparing, because men were excluded from the rule.

Sexist? Probably not. Thoughtless and old-fashioned? Definitely.
It's not sexist, but it shouldn't necessarily be enforced either, especially if it's causing you physical problems.
Men have to deal with dress codes, so why can't women? I feel like women have a problem with everything and anything and try to use the "woman card" as a way out.
Men are not required to wear something painful that poses a health and safety hazard. (And if you were, you could fight it on legal grounds.)

I think men who can not safely shave should not be required to do so either. And they probably need but a doctor's note in many circumstances. Would a woman with facial hair also be required to shave? Facial hair is something that can naturally occur in women too. I mean, if a woman with PCOS doesn't have to shave, men shouldn't either. And you might have good cause if the dress code was not enforced equally.
There was this time in the 90s when they were making women's business suits with shorts for bottoms, and the men at my work said if women can wear shorts they should be allowed to also and they all wore them in protest until the dress code was changed. No one was allowed to wear shorts, even if they were supercutepartofasuit. Were they pulling the man card? Or were they simply suggesting that dress codes with built in gender-based unfairness are inappropriate? I liked the supercuteshortsuits stylistically at the time (I don't know what I was thinking) but the men had a point.

Well if you don't like the dress code, get another job. No wonder women are not taken seriously in the workplace. What next are you going to complain about, the A/C is sexist?
Orrrr take action against the policy? As these people are doing? Like how is ensuring that women don't face unreasonable obstacles to their employment not a good thing?

Being forced to conform to a more strict dress code than men, women face a greater difficulty in trying to achieve something. That isn't fair. How any sane person could believe it is is beyond me.

If I am required to wear heels and makeup to work, I better be getting good health insurance that covers my visits to the podiatrist and dermatologist.
I'm surprised at how many people here think wearing a suit is the same as heels.

You're making a strawman argument. Men are complaining that even in hot weather, they have to wear these really warm suits, while women can at least wear skirts and short sleeves.

you can often take off a blazer if you get too hot. you can drink water if you get too hot. stand in ac if you get too hot.
its quite unprofessional to walk around barefoot so women can't barefoot when their feet or back hurt
the only thing they can possibly do is it. and any cashier knows sitting is often not an option. so
men have to cut their hair virtually short for most jobs, and we have to wear certain clothes too. but its all about you these days.
There's a difference between looking presentable and wearing something which is bad for your health. Have you ever worn heels? Probably not because then you wouldn't have made this comment. Cutting your hair short isn't bad for your health. It might not be your preference, but it isn't unhealthy.
@spuitkaas having long hair doesn't make you any less presentable, and if thats the case then cut your hair off too as we are REQUIRED in most jobs. By the way, I have worn heels as guys are the ones who started off wearing them IN THE FIRST PLACE. so its best not to assume things about others. There are heels designed to combat the problems you talk about, so much for the unhealthy thing. Besides that, you didn't even try and defend your first half of the post and only mentioned the last part because my initial statement pretty much makes your argument look like a ''oh look at me im a victim!'' you talked about discriminatory dress codes, yet shrugged my reply off as cutting your hair to look presentable because you know, men have to cut their hair and wear suits to look presentable. you are not the only one with problems, nor do I feel bad for others who try and make their issues seem bigger than others. we all have struggles with our gender

You see, as a reader I am looking at your intro of you quoting women on the right to wear trousers, and the fact that the sex codes are sexist. As you wrote it yourself in the first half and the women who are coming out have also expressed the same issue claims that the dress code is sexist. The same can be said for males. Also even if your main point was directed at health risks men have the same thing with ties effecting their cerebrovascular reactivity which can lead to brain damage and strokes due to poor circulation to the brain. Either way my initial reply still stands. It is all about you these days. NOBODY else is complaining about any and everything except western women and BLM.

Can you show me some heels above 5 centimeters that are not bad for your health? You can say whatever you want, but your foot always gets lifted and will always be bad for your back and calves.
Women also have to wear hair ties and clothing of the company, which often includes a skirt. I think you might be able to have long hair if you tied it up. But then again I don't really mind working clothing and looking presentable. The only thing I'm really against is heels. Especially because you have shoes that look like heels, but don't have them and it doesn't make you look more strong or presentable to walk like a new born calf.
Some heels are more comfortable and less unhealthy than others, but ALL heels change the way you stand and walk and change the way pressure distributes on your feet.

guys calm down. there are heels out there that combat this problem, although they are pretty pricey. Im just saying, that this take was more than a health problem and I was addressing the first part of the take too. Im not saying suck it up, but im saying if they want to completely diminish women dress codes then the same has to happen for males
A general dress code is one thing. Requiring heels is another thing entirely.
The main point of this myTake has to do with heels and your initial response was to compare that to hair cuts and accuse women of being self centered for caring about their health. So yeah, of course that got us riled up.
@samhradh_leannan no, the main point is women pointing out dress codes, and the heels is just one example why. Its a good point, and even though there is a way to avoid that by getting a heel designed for your foot, the first part of the take is still addressing the fact that women want to wear what men wear.
Both of you have a good point. The job shouldn't requiring you wearing high heels. But it shouldn't require you to have short hair either. Having dress codes based at genders isn't a good idea in my opinion. I thinks equality means equality. I doesn't say equality is always fair, but in this case it's fair with quality and I'm pro gender-equality.
Even heels designed for your feet are still heels. They're still not as healthy as flats. They still change how you're walking and how you stand. Stop acting like comfortable heels are a panacea, they're not at all. The only healthy way to wear heels is to wear them for short periods of time only, not to work all day every day.

While I understand the perspective of the writer, I’d say a policy calling for heels is more about objectification than sexism as such.

If *only* women are *required* to wear heels (with there being no acceptable alternative even for health conditions) then it is sexist. Heels generally do make women look nicer I agree, but unless they're models or similar how they look has nothing to do with their ability to do their job. That's all.

That's exactly what we're talking about. The job, unless it's as an actress/model/stripper, has nothing to do with how she looks. I know that's not going to stop certain businesses but if the *job* is about closing business deals or scanning barcodes it doesn't make a difference if she's a bit shorter and actually able to walk :p

I'm trying to think about how to explain this to you in a way that's easy to get... To women it's not about being pretty or not, as some people have said it's easy to still be beautiful without heels. It'd be like working in an office as a financial advisor but all men are required to be shirtless & tanned. You can see how women could argue "why would anyone mind? It gives them a chance to look hot at work" but really it's treating the men as eye candy, as objects. The more an attitude like that continues, the more the guys would be disrespected over time, passed over for positions, placed in basic roles, thought of in a certain way & that's not helping anyone. For a lot of women heels really wreck their back, feet and legs & create long term problems. Some women are happy in heels 24/7 but since they're an accessory, like say, earrings, there should always be an alternative for those who can't do heels for, whatever reason. Normal shoes are safer, more comfortable & better for work.

@yoshi_wanna_ask I am not sure how good of an analogy that is since we aren't talking about topless women. If so i m sure men would understand and then both could be topless for the good of the customer services.
It's okay to not agree that businesses can make this issue into something sexist, but the idea of being a 'thing' rather than a valued part of a team is why a lot of women have an issue with things like this. Hopefully someone else will explain it better than me but that's where it's coming from anyway :p Also, *most* of the time, men aren't *expected* to appeal to women like that (give or take jobs like the ones I mentioned). Encouraged, maybe. Expected/Required? Rarely. Especially since this (mainly) revolves around business jobs not service jobs. It's okay to agree to disagree, I know it's not going away any time soon but that's where it's coming from anyway, I hope it helps with what other people are saying.
@yoshi_wanna_ask I dont think women are things. I love women and want to protect and love them long time. I just think that they should be empowered to be themselves even if it means going topless at work or walking around pantsless on a nude beach. I'll be honest with you, I get a little bit crazy when I think about pretty girls. I can't help it I just want to kiss them all
Heh, well, I don't know how well that would go down with the average woman. Try looking into videos/talks explaining why women are the way they are and maybe you'll get what I was trying to say a little more. Good luck.

I don't think companies can easily legally require it.
actually stewardess uniforms normally have heels. Tho they've gotten a lot shorter in recent years. But still they wear them and it's actually dangerous. Before you go on that yellow slide in case the plane has to land on water, you have to take off your heels as in not to puncture the slide and deflate it, preventing people from evacuating a sinking plane.
Literally the only reason they still have them is sexism
@nalaa if men preferred to spend money in establishments where men wore heels, men would be told to wear heels.
The bigger wars where I live seem to be what waitresses are required to wear.

@nalaa you say it's 'sexism'. It sort of is but it's not that companies are sexist. It's that they perceive they will make more money if their female staff are in heels.
What's actually interesting is I suspect they may believe that even when their customers are female
well I don't think the question was specific about who is sexist. The companys or the men they're trying to appeal to.
Besides you can't do whatever you want to your employees that's why there are labor regulations. If it's sexist, that fact that it might make money is not a reason to not ban it.
And i'm not sure about the sexy argument in general. I've seen some stupid and unflattering looking uniforms
