I have to link to this post next time someone lists this as a reason why men are disadavantaged.
Well except its completely inaccurate, their was only one man who attempted to board the boat (I believe it was the captian) and he was dragged off by the male passengers. The study is flawed to an extreme degree, I mean 18 shipwrecks in a 160 year time span despite the fact that in 1852 alone their was 18 shipwrecks shows they where quite intentional with which ones they chose not to mention that they ignored the hows and whys men survived more i. e. more robust, the entire crew being male thus more likely to be on deck instead of under the deck (so less likely to get cut off from incoming water) and of course more men on the boat means more men suriving in general. It was a "study" that was debunked immediately. It doesn't get more biased then it, especially as we have occurences of women and children first in the modern day.
@hellionthesagereborn That's sad, because I don't believe in women and children first anyway.
But that is how we are. Women are more important for reproduction then men because one women are more invested, its nine months of strain and restricted movement on the woman (which historically would have been pretty dangerous both in that they would have a harder time fleeing predators/fighting them off and because it would be harder and more taxing to forage for food) plus the several years of nursing they do after the child is born (which obviously a man cannot do so if she dies at this point in time then the child will almost certainly die as well) means that the woman essentially dictates the rate of birth. If we have ten men and ten women and nine men die we can still have ten offspring but if the reverse happens your only going to get one after nine months and even though you could get more offspring they take so much energy that its simply not possible to have more then a few at any given time. This is why men are disposable, because biologically its in our species
(and any man who has already reproduced) best interest to protect women and children over men. Its not particularly pleasant but it is the most pragmatic and is what has ensured our survival as a species.
@hellionthesagereborn I don't think men on sinking ships have time to ponder about their own vs the reproduction values of women.
They don't have to, biology does it. Do you think every time you breathe? Every time you shift your body both awake and in your sleep do you think of how you need to do this to restore blood flow to what ever part of your body in order to prevent the cells from dying from lack of oxygen? When do you see a tall guy do you think about how it means he has had a significantly better and more nutritious diet to get that way and thus is more likely to be better at acquiring food then other males (and processing/absorbing it) making him more fit of do you just think tall guy is attractive? Do you see a guy with broad shoulders and a square jaw as clearly having more testosterone and thus more physically built to protect then those who have less testosterone or do you just think "attractive guy"? You do very little thinking in life, not you you but rather all beings. We respond to things reflexively, which is why one strand of DNA is two meters long, because its initiating most of our
reactions. I mean again, why did multiple men use themselves as human shields for women when that movie theater got shot up several years ago? Why did the men on the Birkenhead and Titanic just decide to die if they did not have a particular drive to do so. When a praying mantis mates some times the female eats the male, this ensures the survival of the offspring because they now have the resources they need to grow, the male however stays their and allows itself to be eaten. Why? If it doesn't have a biological predisposition for it why would it do it? Why do we care for our young if we are not biologically predisposed for it? Our bodies react to things because of evolutionary drives. For example you are biologically wired to have an aversion to specific bugs (spiders and cockroaches as spiders are poisonous and cockroaches carry disease). In fact a scientist was giving a lecture about this biological impulse showing that it was not conscious by putting a sterile cockroach into
a glass of orange juice then offering a hundred dollars for any one who would drink it, fully letting the audience know that it was a sterile cockroach and as such the orange juice would not have been contaminated. No one took the offer even though they where fully aware that no harm would come to them from it. Again we know that most of our drives are biological, we don't act on our thoughts we act on our feelings.
better than everyone staying on the boat and drowning
Children, The Elder, and Women first. I don't mind it and I'd do it if time comes.
The moral of the story don't go on a ship
Noted and forever remembered.
I conclude from this that the author is angry and sad.
I still think we should let the children go first
I agree. Kids should always go first no question about that.
They should do an exception for timid men and let us go first along with the women.
My life is worth at least 3 children
Dying at war while women stay home is not myth.
Isn't it sexist to save a particular gender first?
Good point. In today's world of equality it should just be children first then men and women at an equal rate.
Not really. Women control how fast we reproduce (plus if a woman dies while she is still nursing then the child is also more then likely going to die) so we are biologically inclined to protect women not do to sexist views but becaues from a survival standpoint it is far more efficient. One man can reproduce with multiple women, one woman cannot reproduce with multiple men in the same time, its much more strenous and resource intensive for a woman to reproduce then for a man ergo by protecting women and children you help preserve the species.
Thank you
i thumbed down on this too for no reason.
