Catahoula Leopard Dogs

My Favorite Uncommon Dog Breeds (Part 2)

The Catahoula Cur was developed in Louisiana USA. They were bred to catch and drive wild hogs/cattle to market for slaughter. They make great family dogs but need a solid amount of physical and mental stimuli.

When settlers first moved to northern Louisiana, They found the woods overrun with wild cattle. The cattle were a nuisance so the settlers turned to the Indigenous, Indian dogs that inhabited the woods and bred themselves some hunting companions. It's rumored that there is some red wolf in their ancestry.

Wirehaired Vizslas

My Favorite Uncommon Dog Breeds (Part 2)

Like most other sporting breeds. Wirehaired Vizslas need and exorbitant amount of exercise in order to stay focused and happy. They are eager to please and tireless workers. They make great family dogs and are like like giant "velcro dogs" when it comes to their humans.

The Wirehaired Vizsla is a separate breed from the smooth coated Vizsla and bred to be more tolerant of cold and to retrieve from icy water. The wirehaired vizsla is believed to be bred from Vislas and German Wirehairded Pointing Griffens. Other breeds, including: Pudelpointers, Bloodhounds, and Irish setters, were later added to the mix.

Olde English Bulldogge

My Favorite Uncommon Dog Breeds (Part 2)

Due to careless breeding practices. English bulldogs have suffered a variety of health complications including

-Major Respiratory issues

-Eye problems

-Severe skin allergies/extremely dry skin

-Bone/joint/spine problems

-Overheating

-Etc, etc.

The Olde English Bulldogge is thanks to concerned breeders trying to regain the health and vigor of the original breed, used to bait bull (although, I don't agree w/ the hunting methods). This bully has a longer muzzle and wider nostrils that allow it to breath freely. The body is leaner and more proportionate which helps mobility. They're still sensitive toextreme temperatures but not as much as the AKC bulldog. I hope that they continue to improve the bloodlines of this regal breed.

Mammut (bear coated Olde English bulldogges)

My Favorite Uncommon Dog Breeds (Part 2)

The Mammut are basically fluffier Olde English Bulldogges. They are also being bred with an emphasis on the original, leaner, more healthy bulldog standards. They are a separate breed From Olde English Bulldogs but their appearance (with the exception of coat type), temperament, historical purpose, and energy level are nearly the exact same.

Thai Ridgeback

My Favorite Uncommon Dog Breeds (Part 2)

Thai ridgebacks are a very primitive breed that originated from.. you guessed it.. Thailand! They were first brought to the US as recently as 1994. They were used to pull carts, guard, and hunt vermin. They were also used to other dangerous prey like cobras and wild boar (pretty badass).

This breed's distinctive traits include pigmentation (black/blue markings) on the tongue and a pronounced ridge of fur down it's spine. They have a high prey drive and can be very territorial/ standoffish when it comes to other animals and strangers. They are very strong willed so they require a consistent leader and strict guidance.

Chinese Shar Pei (bear coated)

My Favorite Uncommon Dog Breeds (Part 2)

Bear coated Shar Pei are 1 of the Breeds 3 coat types. I find the bear coated variety adorable. I've recently discovered that people believe their droopy faces are bred, solely, for appearances. This is the case with many breeds but the Shar Pei are more than just a loveable face.

Statues that resemble this breed have been dated back to the Han dynasty 200 b.c (this isn't a recent designer breed)

The breed was first noted for it's use as a guarding and hunting dog. Due to its fierce reputation, it was later used as a fighting dog. The excessive folds of skin + bristly coat protected it's face and throat in the fight ring. Other dogs struggled to grip and break through the skin.

Shar Pei are typically loyal and calm but due to their protective nature, early socialization is important.

Their pigmented tongue, similar to those of the chow chow were believed to ward off evil spirits.

Pudelpointer

My Favorite Uncommon Dog Breeds (Part 2)

The Pudelpointer is a versatile hunting breed that was developed in Germany. It's a pointing breed that resulted from the cross of an English Pointer and the German Hunting Poodle. This breed is powerful, driven, and unsuited for a sedentary lifestyle. They're good family dogs and can make gentle companions for children and cats if properly socialized but should not be trusted with other small animals (i.e birds or rabbits) because of their hunting instincts. They love water and are smart working dogs. If you have a job, they'll be eager to get it done.
