Drinking Starbucks is a status symbol? Agree?

I was listening to the radio this morning and that's what the DJ said. Agree or no and why?

To some extent, I would say yes. To be able to spend $4-$7 daily on coffee when you can get it elsewhere for half the price makes it kind of a status symbol. A bit like driving a Lexus or a BMW- there are other cars out there at a much cheaper price that serve the same purpose, but people who can afford it will often go for the more expensive one.

This isn't to say only people with money buy into the status though. Sometimes people with money are quite discerning about purchases and will buy McDonald's or Tim Horton's (at least here in Canada) or whatever because they don't like Starbucks or honestly think it's too expensive for what you get. There are also people who can't actually afford to pay that much for coffee but they do anyway because they like it or they buy into the whole status symbol thing.

No. Starbucks is stupid. The first Starbucks opened up a few months ago here, and now it's overcrowded with 12 year old girls with iphones and uggs. Unless being a 12 year old girl is a status symbol, I doubt it.

um thanks for MH, also i didn't mean it in a racist way. It's just something that's more prominent with white girls , specifically preppy girls. Men don't usually get it as a status symbol unless they are a douche.

To me it's a symbol of someone that loves bad coffee. Or they like desserts that they just pretend are coffee drinks (caramel frappucino, for example).

I'm. It trying to sound conceited, but I honestly wouldn't drink anything from that place. I go to indie coffee shops that roast their own organic beans daily, and use $15k Slayer espresso machines. And my drink there is actually cheaper than it is At Starbucks. Go figure!

Do you have any label that you prefer? Or you go always with home made ones? Surprisingly we don't have much Starbucks in Belgium, maybe 4 -5 in the whole country, we go cafés to drink coffee

I don't drink coffee so I don't know if theirs is anything special, but judging from their prices and the fact that people keep posting selfies must mean that there is more than just the coffee that makes it popular.

I hate starbucks there coffee is disgusting I prefer this little family owned joint there coffee is so much better. It's stronger and darker not some sugar drink like starbucks.

Ah I always get americanos and cappuccinos from Starbucks. They're not all sugary.

Yeah I drink black Americanos or dry cappuccinos. Bitter is better.

I just drink black coffee or coffee with creamer that alters the taste to something darker and does not sweeten it. Irish coffee is always good as well plus my coffee shop I'd very relaxing leather lounge chairs, couches, jazz music and a fireplace.

It's mid market where I work. Nobody drinks anything worse and if you're tore if money around you drink americanos from some hipster place that roasts their own beans.

I guess so. Regular people (sensible people) won't usually go there.
It means you don't mind throwing away money for they same coffee that you can get in a corner store. You're just paying for the name and those expensive cups.

I think people that buy Starbucks buy it for the label yes, but here the popularity of Starbucks I think has taken a decline in popularity.

Um, not sure. It seems like all of the preppy people hang out there. I've never went into Starbucks a day in my life. I'm pretty picky on coffee. I'd rather make it at home. I heard its pretty expensive for one cup anyway.

Yeah I go to a handful of cafés, but my favorite one is a placed called Keane Coffee. It's so amazing!!! They have their own branded roaster that's made in the US, too:

Where I live in Florida there are numerous coffee shops that serve lattes and macchiatos that are about half the price and better. However, I have noticed when traveling that there are not as many of these coffee shops in other towns. But there always seems to be a Starbucks around no matter where you are.

Interesting. I've traveled a lot and Starbucks coffee is the same prices you'd find in a cafe, and they're all over Europe. Just small towns don't have them in my experience.

Where I do research we have a coffee delivery service. You can order literally any drink they serve at Starbucks and it's delivered to you within say 15 minutes for like 3-4 dollars. Same drink at our Starbucks is about 6-7 dollars.
