A bit like driving a Lexus or a BMW- there are other cars out there at a much cheaper price that serve the same purpose, but people who can afford it will often go for the more expensive one.
This isn't to say only people with money buy into the status though. Sometimes people with money are quite discerning about purchases and will buy McDonald's or Tim Horton's (at least here in Canada) or whatever because they don't like Starbucks or honestly think it's too expensive for what you get. There are also people who can't actually afford to pay that much for coffee but they do anyway because they like it or they buy into the whole status symbol thing.10 Reply

She didn't mean that, you already know. Don't make it ugly @prettybabe
- +1 y
um thanks for MH, also i didn't mean it in a racist way. It's just something that's more prominent with white girls , specifically preppy girls. Men don't usually get it as a status symbol unless they are a douche.
To me it's a symbol of someone that loves bad coffee. Or they like desserts that they just pretend are coffee drinks (caramel frappucino, for example).
I'm. It trying to sound conceited, but I honestly wouldn't drink anything from that place. I go to indie coffee shops that roast their own organic beans daily, and use $15k Slayer espresso machines. And my drink there is actually cheaper than it is At Starbucks. Go figure!24 Reply- +1 y
Do you have any label that you prefer? Or you go always with home made ones? Surprisingly we don't have much Starbucks in Belgium, maybe 4 -5 in the whole country, we go cafés to drink coffee
- +1 y
I am not surprised you like eating now i am gonna add drinking too :)
I will check the site - +1 y
I wish we had better coffee places where I live. Starbucks is as good as it gets, I'm afraid.

+1 yI think so. At least to people that insist on going there regularly.
I don't drink coffee so I don't know if theirs is anything special, but judging from their prices and the fact that people keep posting selfies must mean that there is more than just the coffee that makes it popular.10 Reply

Ah I always get americanos and cappuccinos from Starbucks. They're not all sugary.
- +1 y
Yeah I drink black Americanos or dry cappuccinos. Bitter is better.
- +1 y
That's pretty cool!
+1 yStarbucks is no more "high status" than McDonalds, in my opinion. But I think a lot of teenage girls feel that holding the cup makes them look cool.
12 Reply- +1 y
Their soy lattes are on point, though.
- +1 y
No denying that!
As much of a status symbol as it is to eat a BigMac or to spend your afternoon at Wal-Mart.
40 ReplyAt times When I see girls walking around with Starbucks cups it kind of looks like they feel much cooler just because they have coffee or whatever from Starbucks or they think they are cooler than you! It's ridiculous!
12 Reply- +1 y
Starbucks tend to be around richer, fancier neighborhoods. That's why it seems to be a status thing
+1 yIt's mid market where I work. Nobody drinks anything worse and if you're tore if money around you drink americanos from some hipster place that roasts their own beans.

+1 yI guess so. Regular people (sensible people) won't usually go there.
It means you don't mind throwing away money for they same coffee that you can get in a corner store. You're just paying for the name and those expensive cups.10 Reply
+1 yYup! I mean I like their frapps and they do have some exceptional drinks, but c'mon, if you're drinking plain ol' coffee is it really necessary to pay double the amount of a regular cup at tims?
10 ReplyDepends where you are. In Italy, it's referred to as "acqua sporca" (dirty water). ;)

Oh I believe it. I've traveled quite a bit and coffee in Europe doesn't compare!

+1 yYou could look at it that way, or you could say: "Wow, there really are a lot of stupid people who pay 4 or 5 dollars every day for a cup of coffee."

+1 yStarbucks just markets their products to classier people and yuppies. That doesn't make it a status symbol. That DJ is an idiot.
10 ReplyI think people that buy Starbucks buy it for the label yes, but here the popularity of Starbucks I think has taken a decline in popularity.

+1 yI don't think so. If i go there it's because I like their drinks not because I feel the need to portray a certain symbol or status of myself

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yUm, not sure. It seems like all of the preppy people hang out there. I've never went into Starbucks a day in my life. I'm pretty picky on coffee. I'd rather make it at home. I heard its pretty expensive for one cup anyway.

Yeah I go to a handful of cafés, but my favorite one is a placed called Keane Coffee. It's so amazing!!! They have their own branded roaster that's made in the US, too:

I geek out on this kinda stuff, and probably way too much, but to me it's fascinating! :-)
Anonymous(36-45)+1 yI do not agree. It just means that you are over paying for your drinks.

I don't know anywhere else you can go and get lattes and macchiatos for cheaper just saying haha
Opinion Owner+1 yWhere I live in Florida there are numerous coffee shops that serve lattes and macchiatos that are about half the price and better. However, I have noticed when traveling that there are not as many of these coffee shops in other towns. But there always seems to be a Starbucks around no matter where you are.
- +1 y
Interesting. I've traveled a lot and Starbucks coffee is the same prices you'd find in a cafe, and they're all over Europe. Just small towns don't have them in my experience.
Opinion Owner+1 yWhere I do research we have a coffee delivery service. You can order literally any drink they serve at Starbucks and it's delivered to you within say 15 minutes for like 3-4 dollars. Same drink at our Starbucks is about 6-7 dollars.
- +1 y
Not where I live haha. Small cities and low selection. So you get shitty timmies coffee or Starbucks, second cup, etc.
That sounds really cool though. Coffee delivery, that is. Not $7 for a Starbucks!
