It is supposed to mean that getting to know you he realizes his faults, flaws and imperfections and you deserve the best, so he is trying to improve himself. You inspire him to be a better person.
Hope he wasn't just using it as a cheesy line.
There an old saying "you change because of someone, not for someone". You are having a positive impact on him. Or he said it to try and impress you. The fact he's reluctant to explain would make me think the latter.

He sees you as a person with with a good soul and u give him the alacrity to change himself and also have a good soul
