Is it bad to be ashamed of my race and culture?

Anonymous
I am Indian and I HATE it, even though I am Americanized. I mean the movies, music, and food are good, but aside from that I hate being Indian and Indian culture.

My parents are not as conservative as most INDIAN parents and my mom did not flip out when I admitted that I am personally not attracted to Indian girls generally (I didn't just come right out and do it - she asked me). Her response was neutral. And I have to say, most Indian parents are REALLY strict. But my parents ARE more conservative than the average white parents about things like driving, dating, etc.

Yes one part of me hating being Indian is that I am primarily attracted to white girls and white girls typically aren't attracted to Indians.

But really, that's only one reason. I just hate seeing and hearing about how some Indian parents are so overprotective and repressive of their children. It makes me cringe seeing children being forced into arranged marriages, jobs, etc. How they're expected to be in the top 1% in academics (my parents aren't AS uptight but they still do have relatively high expectations which I haven't been meeting). It's like the parents want to live their children's life! Really, some Indian parents don't give a shit about their children's happiness.

Then all these negative stereotypes about how we suck at hygiene, have a thick accent, and use women for sex.

I am neither of those and I am actually a hopeless romantic who desires to be in a real relationship (but unfortunately girls don't give me the time of day). There could be no sex in a relationship and I would still be content given there was a reasonable amount of romance. I am actually interested in having real romantic relationships.

I am also starting to hate the language. I speak it at home for my parents (and that's it) and I honestly can't stand hearing Hindi anymore either.

The reason I hate all these things is because people will naturally associate me with these stereotypes and assumptions.

So is it bad that I am ashamed of being Indian? Or is it okay to be ashamed of your race?
