Is it illegal for a 19 year old to date a 16 year old m?

Ok, just wondering, is it illegal for me, a 19 year old girl, to a date a 16 year old guy?

There would be no sex, just a solid relationship.

I'm wondering, cuz a friend of mine says its illegal for me to just date him, and that she could, and would call the cops on me for dating him. She likes him too.

We live in New Mexico, age of consent here is 17.

Not sure about New Mexico, but most states either recognize a defense to sex crimes based on age of consent when the two people are within a specified age difference (usually three years; like, exactly three years to the day) or define such crimes as not including those situations.

Either way, such crimes are always defined based on certain, particularly described sexual acts. If you aren't doing those things, it isn't a crime anyway.

Aside from that, being female, it's not likely that you'd get prosecuted no matter what happened.
