Depends on where you live. Living in Manhattan, it will be okay. Living someone with a very good cost of living, it will be a very nice income. The issue is, whats behind it? Hopefully there is a significant amount of investments and savings. Hopefully it isn't being eaten up by a huge mortgage and private school tuitions. If in a good cost of living area, no debt, and substantial savings and investments then yeah, it is enough to buy whatever you want within reason but certainly not everything all the time. and just remember how much you will pay in taxes, you know, for the other half of the population in the US that thinks they are so amazing as citizens but yet pay no Federal tax but think the people that do don't pay enough.

Crazy that people think 400k USD is not rich. The people that earn this kind of money are the big risk takers in investment banks (plus a million dollar bonus). Otherwise you're looking at big property developers or company owners. These people are certainly considered upper-class!

1.2K opinions shared on Other topic. That's a LOT of money by any measure. Very few people make that much. Most CEOs don't even make that much. Most successful business owners don't make nearly that much. With that kind of money they'll be multi-millionaires in no time. If that's salary they'll also pay a hell of a lot of taxes, probably over 50%. But still, 200K take home is darn good money.
10 ReplyThere's a pretty ridiculous standard for being "rich" in the US -- just look at what some corporate CEO's are paid. In that vein, some people won't see 400k as rich.
To me though, that's earning an incredibly good living. In fact, I kind of shudder at what sort of life I'd be leading if I made this much money. Gotta hope I release I massively successful novel, or it probably ain't happening. LOL10 Reply

Then yeah its good money. Not Rockerfella rich - but certainly in the top 5% of people in the world (maybe even higher) at an offhand guess.

+1 yRich. Affluent is around $100k-$200k, which is rare and usually only reserved for STEM, medical, and law professionals.
Rich is $200k-$1 million, with very rich being $500k+. This class is usually reserved for big risk investors, CEO's, successful surgeons, and other professionals sprinkled in. It is a rare and abundant salary.20 Reply Any six figure income is considered high. If you've reached that high in salary then most would see you as successful. You're no millionare so don't act like one.

Asker+1 yWhat does a millionaire act like? You wouldn't know me from a bar of soap so to say that, the only person who would be 'acting like a millionaire' is you, with your poor judgement.
Asker+1 yI am simply wondering if that's rich in other people's eyes, as everyone has a different income.
- +1 y
A little offended? Your response kinda shows you were when my last sentence wasn't even directed towards you. Millionaires do act a certain way, and multiple times put a face on for the public usually to be some sort of role model.
Money shouldn't determine a person's character qualities, Which in a lot of cases for richer people, is true. 400k isn't really remotely close to feel like you're all high and mighty. I know a couple REAL millionaires personaly. And both of them act the part which I believe is redicoulous.
+1 yFor a single person, yes. If you can't get by on that then you're doing something wrong.

It's a healthy income. But no, not rich.

What? How is 33000 USD per month not rich? That is ridiculously rich. Wtf.
- +1 y
@Mesonfielde you have to consider where you live, number of dependents, total expenses. it isn't that much in more expensive areas of the USA.
- +1 y
Right. And I earn 800 USD per month as a programmer in my shitty country, and people say "earning 3300 USD per month being rich is a question of where you live". Riiiiight. There is no way that wouldn't be enough for a living unless you get appendicitis or cancer and the USA health care rips you off.
- +1 y
@Mesonfielde when did i say it wasn't enough of a living? i never said that. i simply don't consider 400k to be 'rich'. i know people who make that much and they still have financial struggles. you don't have to agree with me- don't be so close-minded as to think the situation I'm describing doesn't exist. it certainly does.
- +1 y
They probably need a budget if they still have issues with 4 times as much money as I get per month.
- +1 y
@Mesonfielde well in the words of Warren Buffet "maybe I should write a book on how to get by on $500 million. Because apparently there’s a lot of people that don’t really know how to do it"

she's not wrong. it is highly dependent on the area of residency. im guessing the people who downvote this answer think about 400k/yearly to support only themselves and in their current situation. but her scenario does exist, SoCal for example, 400k/yearly, before taxes in my opinion isn't enough to be considered rich. first of all, if you're already pulling 400k/yearly im assuming you got a baller job, that means you'll aim somewhat decently high for everything, house, car, etc. a nice house in SoCal pushes around $900k-$1.5mil, nice car $60k-$100k. then add kids to that, HoA fees. if you plan to live like a rich person then you will, you don't simply buy a nice house and keep every other aspect of your life like a more simple person. if the spouses yearly income matches then it can be more comfortable but rich also implies you have more money to lose than money saved for security. $400k before taxes in certain areas is living within security, playing it safe. not exactly "rich"
- +1 y
@BertMacklinFBI just because expensive things are still expensive (cars, for example) that doesn:z mean a rich person isn't rich. No one is forcing them to buy 30 cars, and if they buy 30 cars and don't have enough left that month for food, that just means they are horrible at handling money. They are still rich based on income.
