If you're looking at knife fighting, I think anything from 2-4 inches would work fine for very close in fighting. Most of the organs and main arteries are within that 2-4 inch depth. Hell, you can spill someone's intestines with a box cutter if you think about it.

Ehh, go a little bit longer.
One of the reasons why Alexander the Great was so successful was because his army used longer spears. So if you have a longer weapon, you won't have to get too close to the enemy. You'll stab him first.

Well there's more to it then that, in addition to their longer spears they also carried a small shield on a sling on their back and a short double edged sword for close quarters combat. And they were drilled and disciplined to perfection so that they functioned as one, and they adopted the phalanx used famously by the Greeks and were quite versatile and adept at it.

A fan of their 1095? It's a bit of a bitch to sharpen especially with how they hollow grind their edges.
      Did you reprofile the edge?
I used to have a Ka-Bar tanto. Loved its piercing power. Goes through steel easy with no fear of chipping.

Both great knives. One design is tested in WW2 , the other design is tested in feudal japan back in the days of samurai and geisha. I see the leather handle on the USMC , heard it takes a bit of upkeep to make sure it won't slowly dries up and flake. Prefer the Kraton synthetic handle myself. More durable and no need to worry about it falling apart.

@Azgeda Yup both are great blades, speaking of Feudal Japan I love my Katana even more then my K-Bar and lol? the handle isn't leather it's just painted to look that way the sheath however is leather.

Eh? I thought the classic USMC handle is just a bunch of leather washers stacked together or something , they changed the design now? Well that's a shame , should have stayed true to the classic.
Anyone , oooh a katana eh? They're great and all but way above my ability to maintain them lol. What's the name of the forge that made your katana?

@Azgeda Well the classic standard issue ones for the actual marines back then probably but not the ones on the site, I'm looking at the one I got from there right now and it's just painted brown on the raised areas of the handle to look like leather. And yeah but o well *shrugs* still the same blade.

Hah yeah a katana, yeah they do take a lot of work you have to completely strip and take apart the handle and the guard and there i a lengthy ritual of cleaning it, gotta have a special cloth, powder and oil.

Um I actually don't know the name of the forge all I know about it is it's from the renowned swordsmithing town of Longquan located in the remote, green mountains of Qinxi. Who's been making swords for about 2,600 years.

I've heard of LongQuan before , quite a number of forges there. Basically all next to each other forging all day and night. The build qualities differ greatly between forges. Heard of quite a few horror stories of blades snapping right at the tang bouncing off and well, off to the ER for the unfortunate man.
      What steel is it?

@Azgeda Yeah lot of different forges there, not all of my blades come from there though, the most recent one did but all my blades are strong I cut clean through a tree limb yesterday like tissue paper, laser cut lol.

All my blades have the same type of steel though, Clay Tempered 1095 steel good stuff can cut through bamboo, bone, iron wire and so on. And of course have that natural hamon that makes those blades so darn beautiful. Then I have some indestructible synthetic bokkens for hard sparring practice. Thinking of getting some dull none sharpened training blades for real fighting/sparring.

1095 is ok, but if its not properly cared for it will rust away. 1095 is notorious for rusting on you if you are by the ocean.

S60V eh? Oooooh I heard heat treatment is an arse on those metal , verrry premium , the finer things in life :P

I have to agree on the 1095 comment tho. Not exactly corrosion resistant , but it's also very unforgiving when used on swords as it's too hard to flex , coupled with tempering gotta be careful with the edge or it'll chip or worse break in the spine , not much warning at all , either it'll go through if it won't it's going back into you.
Personally if I am going for an "unbreakable" sword I'll rather go with T10 , tungsten addictive can jack up the HRC to 60 ish even without tempering but even then I won't really want it too long.
For length I think the silicon infused 9260 would be safer bet. Sure , it is only about as hard as 1060 but it flexes real nice, can bend it upon itself and it'll bounce back.

@Azgeda S90V is even worse, only custom artisans use it because it's just so damn strong manufacturers can't use it for that simple reason. I was recently interested in K6 Satellite metal which has no iron in in but even though it's a high-end metal alloy it still lacks in durability.

@Azgeda Well that's partly what makes the Katana great because due to the way it's forged it's both strong and flexible being partly hard and soft, leads to better shock absorption and is less prone to breaking.

Also traditional forges do not use VG10
Or S60V, S30V metals. They use, Low carbon steel: (1060/1050/1045...), Folded steel 11-13 times fold will make the blade contains 4000-16000 layers. and High carbon steel (1095/T10) And then you have Combined materials or Hybrid Metal and then of course you have the cutting edge itself which differs in strength and each shape/edge has it's own unique properties.

You also have to take into account that you don't hack people with a Katana you let the razor sharp edge do all the work you use speed and let the razor cut through people. And when you deflect, block of parry you use the side of the blade not the edge.

What do you mean traditional as in hammer and anvil?
S60V S30V and S90V and not formed in traditional forges because it would take far too much time, they simply are not advanced. They are prepared by custom artisans.

@OrdinaryGentleman Traditional as in they follow traditional and ancient methods the same way they've been doing it for thousands of years. And I wouldn't say that's true as you do know that the greatest forges in Japan take well over a year to fully make a master, crafted sword right?

And have you ever actually seen the entire process that goes into making a Katana? because I have and it's pretty advanced when compared to any to forge I've seen.

Lol not even talking about katanas i was talking about steels and materials. I don't pay attention to fancy knickknacks like katanas, knives, on the other hand, i do pay attention to as they can actually serve a purpose rather than as a mantle piece. I agree japan comes out with some of the best blades for what they work with. Don't know much about the forging process but i don't really care when i can get a better blade at a quarter of the cost with actual use in mind when purchasing it.

The "traditional way" the Japanese forged the swords are only used because the inadequate bloomery and crappy Tamahagane. They basically had to hammer the shit out of the blade so as to homogenize the lattice. The traditional folding way is obsolete , unnecessary when it comes to modern steel. There's still some use for lamination but it's more expedient to just pick an alloy and be done with it at the tempering stage.

      @OrdinaryGentleman
Personally I think 5160 and 9260 hits right at the mark. Their plastic region goes ALLLL the way out and just BOINGS back into shape. The high carbon steel have a high yield point but that's exactly why it's weak , it doesn't deform , instead microscopic cracks starts appearing in the lattice from all the cyclic loads. The ancient warriors were dumb when they come to the so called "holy sword" thing passed along generations , just racking up the microscopic cracks and some unfortunate muck in the future is gonna have the sword break on him in battle and WULP. GG

So are we like... the dwarves in the forges talking about metal now? XD

@OrdinaryGentleman A katana is hardly a fancy knickknack and also has been what we've been talking about for the majority of the conversation don't you were for that part. And you should care about the forging process, the forging process is what makes a blade what it is lol.

Besides it's been proven a master crafted Katana can actually split handgun bullet clean in half with no actual damage to the blade itself. And during a test it was shown and proven that a master crafted Katana cut 7 heavy machine gun, 50 Caliber steel core copper jacketed rounds in half before snapping. And this is due to the forging process and materials you care so little about. A katana is also capable of cutting a man clean in half as well, in fact there was an entire school dedicated to it. Pretty damn good for a useless knickknack.
