Is it worse to fail at something or never attempt it in the first place?

I've been having deep thoughts today and this one of them. Do you think it's worse if you fail at something, even though you've tried? Or do you think it's worse to never even attempt it in the first place?

I personally think it's worse to never attempt in the first place. I live by "if you never try, you'll know" and at least if you try then you will know.

Anyone throughout history that's ever done anything important has failed many, many times before their success. Perhaps the greatest human achievement so far is sending men to the moon and back - and during the 1960s, when this project was under way, there were literally tens of thousands of failures of parts, components, ideas, concepts, etc. Countless rockets blew up before they finally got one to fly, and we lost 3 astronauts on a launch pad TEST where the rocket wasn't even fueled!

Look at sports stars: there's not a single Hall Of Famer who hasn't had many, many failures along the way. Michael Jordan - likely the best basketball player of all time, was cut from his high school team. Many of the best baseball pitchers were sent back down to the minors at some point in their career.

Many, many musicians and bands lost contests or lost record deals prior to having a hit record. Tens of thousands of actors lost good parts, or were ignored and passed over, before fortune granted them a break that made their career.

Of COURSE it's better to try and fail than to not try at all. Every failure is an opportunity to LEARN SOMETHING - and failure often teaches you the best, most important lessons that become key to your later success.

Embrace failure! As long as you don't let it stop you, and as long as you learn the lessons the failure can teach you, failure is a GOOD thing! There is no reward without risk.

why do we behave with a mentality of seeing the most negative outcome and thats fair enough in a natural order but often we let it stop us... thats something i miss in myself from youth and my twenties, so free and flowing, i look back and think where the hell is that person she would kick my arse now xx

I prefer just to fail at something because a lesson always comes out of it. I made tons of mistakes and I'm glad that happened because I now know my lesson and what to do next time it happens. And I learn for other mistakes and make sure to look into before I ever get into something just in case I might fail. So to be honest if your never failed, your not living.

It depends. Failure can come with both a cost and a benefit or either. Generally, I think its better to have an attitude that you should try, but failure can have a cost that is significant enough to mean it would have been better to have just left it alone in the first place.

I try to live by "you won't know until you try it" but I'm also a perfectionist, so sometimes I do have trouble jumping into something without the reassurance of not failing. It's necessary to still try though.

It's always best to try something or you'll always wonder the rest of your life if you could do it. Anyone can do anything they want if they keep trying. So if you want something bad enough and you try hard enough you'll reach your goal. Never stop trying.

Never attempt. You have to try and keep trying, you may not have the correct formula for success yet. But here are definitely times when it feels like you should give up.

I think more people would try things if society wasn't so unforgiving. Or they wouldn't lose so much in the process.

Depends on what you loose for the attempt. And what you loose if you didn't make it.

If you loose your life trying then probably not a good idea.

What else you shouldn't bet for the attempt? Your youth? Plenty of people do that, betting away their youth on a dream. Your wealth? Sure, that's how gambling and investment work. Just don't loose. Your loved ones? Some people bet their loved ones... when they cheat!!

in my opinion you have to calculate your chances of success against your determination to be successfull. so if those 2 are too low, don´t try it but if one of them is high enough to compensate for the other, it is worth it.
