If it's a small child, then shoulders. Anyone bigger and it would need to be a piggyback ride. My back and shoulders couldn't handle a shoulder ride for anyone bigger than a small child.
It's easier on the back, but less tiring on shoulders since you can use your whole body to support the weight.
Piggybacking. I one time almost broke my neck carrying someone on my shoulders.
If the person was much heavier than you... makes sense. They say that you should never carry someone heavier than you in any way.
Piggybacking is much easier.

I would guess piggy back but never held a person on my shoulders.
I always carry my sister at the beach in our swimsuits both ways. It is easier to carry her piggyback but I still like to carry her sitting on my shoulders as well. Both ways are fun!
