I LOVE THIS QUESTION!!! Can't wait to read answers. It's really hard. I fantasize about being this virtuoso multi-instrumentalist. Im a beginner on clarinet after quitting trumpet. But I'd say 1 is violin/viola (not sure of sound differences) because it is such precise fine sound instrument. #2 would be electric guitar.

Why'd you quit trumpet?

First, primary reason was that I got braces, and it hurt. 2nd, it was loud for an apartment. 3rd, it is very difficult to get say to d on staff or above. Very difficult. 4th, you need to have a good ear to know which partial you're at when using 1 given fingering. As you get higher, partials become closer. So say open (no valves down) is c below staff, g on staff, and a note above that. 4th, it's hard to sound nice on it. 5th, I made a mistake on cool looking Chinese black trumpet I bought and would've had to buy new one since repair didn't really fix it. But mostly braces.

If you're really undecided, say you have noise constraints, never plaything before, and have limited money, then I'd suggest digital piano. You learn music theory right in front of you. Can play all kinds of styles. Many cheap ways to learn.

Wow. At $500? Should a regular person (who's not really gonna be using it professionally) be investing that much?

Like for example, on digital keyboards, at $400 price, you begin to get weighted keys, which are heavier on one end and lighter on other end, similar to feel of real piano. The quality of each note is higher because they use better data source and technology. The keys are better. In clarinets, at about $500 you are in top notch ABS or plastic clarinets or can buy used wood one. If you buy used, you're gonna need to repair it for $100 minimum. Say $500-600 are your starter Alto sax from reputable store brand. I imagine guitars get better at this price point.

Say you spend $200 on instrument now, use it and decide you want to get good at it. Your first teacher is gonna say you need to buy $1000 instrument to get better in right way. Lot of piano teachers are sn9bs on digital piano, but I suspect they're wrong. I'd definitely do digital if I wanted to learn keyboard: tools, portability, headphones in your dorm room, different sounds and more.

You can buy good starter instrument for $300-400 area. It'd be much better if you got 88 key keyboard vs 76 or 61. But lighted keys and other teaching tools are tempting. That $150 keyboard is not bad way to try it out. But you need to sit on something. Ideally you need something to hold keyboard. You may have headphones but may need an adapter. You need something to hold music books.

I was lying about music teacher saying you need better instrument. 30 minute music lesson per week which is short but recommended is $30 x 48 weeks = $1440. But you can learn basics of piano on your own, from software/apps, videos or from friends say. Every girl thinks she can sing. If you're in a dorm room or shared house, instrument you can plug into headphones will be real helpful. One more note...

What makes piano good is that for example b and c and e and f? Are 1/2 step apart while other notes are 1 full step apart. On piano, you see that b and c white keys are right next to each other. You see when you're on a scale besides concert c. You hear perfectly how an accidental (# or flat) sounds different. You can play single notes or true chords and you see how a good chord, the notes blend together well.

One different alternative then I'll stop. Hand drums are fun. You learn rhthym. You have possibility of drum circles since at that age like on college field or park. Djembe or doumbek or bongos. Probably can get ok drum for $60-150. But hard to practice alone quietly.

Thank you, I am musically talented. Iuse to be able to sing also until I destroyed my vocal cords singing a concert in my Senior year of High School with Laryngitis, I had no voice for two weeks just started getting it back did a school concert and loss my voice for 8 months.

Maybe keyboard instruments like piano. I like to compose digital music and can semi-competently improvise and record on a keyboard but generally need to quantize and tweak away my recording mistakes because I suck too much to get the timing perfect (also often have to record in A minor or C major since I suck at hitting the black keys). If I had a proper background in playing piano, I'd probably be able to do that whole recording process a whole lot more efficiently.

Other would be like acoustic guitar. That seems to be a useful instrument for song writers to explore ideas and I like how quickly you can start playing complex arpeggios on them while exploring a chord progression.

I would probably pick the piano due to many of my favorite songs having a piano played in them at some part or for the whole majority of the song. There have been many songs where a piano was played or used, that have elicited certain emotions from me that I cannot remember any other instrument doing. Each instrument is dependent on the player, but from my experience, I’ve had a much higher positive experience listening to the piano played more than any other instrument.

The guitar, because I already play the piano moderately well, so it would mean acquiring an entire new skill to perfection while still being able to progress with the piano.
Plus, I like the sound and portability of the guitar.
And while the piano is very versatile, it's hard to find latin music to play with it, while the guitar is mostly used on those.

If you want to get I to a band and such things drums are the way to go
It is generally harder to learn than guitar bass and so on it is often more expensive in equipment and you can't generally rehearse in an apartment etc. All those things just lead to less drummers available overall
