You see it in the mirror because the mirror reflects the light back.
What it refers to is not looking in a mirror but straight ahead at anything else.
The main reason is stereo parallax. Each eye sees the nose in a different position because it is so close. You can notice this if you look down at your nose and alternate closing the right or left eye. The visual region that is blocked by the nose with one eye is "seen" by the other eye. During the first stage of visual processing, the brain forms a unified image from both eyes and takes the region from the eye that is not blocked by the nose. You can also notice this effect if you put a hand in front of one eye close to your face. You can still your hand but it looks semi-transparent.

The second, less important reason is that the nose is in the peripheral vision where it is not very noticeable, and it is also out of focus (because you are focusing in the distance). These factors make the nose region less prominent and easier for the brain to block from being sent on to later visual processing areas.

It is a rare occasion where I will see a picture that is so cool I got to save it. I have seen some fun picks of gaggers and saved a freeze frame because it looked so cool. It is the closest you can get to seeing a gagger for the most part in real life, so I treasure that. I really think pictures of gaggers is really cool! So when one of yours came up, I saved it... It is just a really cool picture. All that for the first piece second piece I have done some photoshop my friend forbid my from using his face ever again because I put it in a toilet, tee hee…. I could not think of a good picture that would not look like someone that had a physical ailment, I think those kids in childrens memorial hospital are going through enough bad stuff... so I am being bold and taking a risk... here is your face hapinus without a nose and I posted the best one I could find of myself and you can do whatever you want with it and post it. In fact It it's big enough to use I dare you! That should be a lot of fun. A hint is it use printscreen and copy it to a paint program. But I am sure you know how to do that already. I hope you get a kick of this

The brain sees it at all times. It just doesn't pay any attention to it until you think about it. You see it in a mirror because it's not normal. It's not going to actually think "ah, my nose! Can't look at it!"
