Why did prisoners in the past wear neck irons?

I know they put handcuffs and leg irons on prisoners and slaves so they couldn't escape. But why did they need to restrain their necks too? It sounds like waste of metal. #Prisoner #Slavery #NeckIron

If you're chained up with handcuffs or leg irons etc, you can live without it and possibly break your hands or your leg/foot to escape the restraints, but nobody is going to break their neck to get out of a neck iron. Also the shape of the human torso, neck and head make it impossible for someone to maneuver out of it.
I feel like it's also very degrading, it's like saying the prisoner is a chained up dog.

I was told once that it was to give then lots of pain and choak them it they fought and or if they tried to pull away and it was heavy if you escaped.

I think before human rights organisations came about - There was always an element of torture in captivity - If you look at your pic, he can't lie down, has to stay standing and even if he fell asleep he would back into a steel collar - In this case I say sleep deprivation was the goal.

Because humans are inhumane, it's in their nature, not all of us but most... firstly, inhumane when committing a serious crime that would get you in jail and secondly, inhumane when confining a person to a bounded area and exposing them to suffering such as this...

More for suffering than necessity. Back in those days, prisons were just places to hold your torture victims. Torture was such a common practice that if you were only being sentenced to jail time, you could practically walk out of the joint.

it guarantees that they can't escape due to thickness of a human's neck being narrower than the head unless they separate their head from their torso but that ain't gonna help them
