Why do hanged men have to wear a hood when on the gallows?

Usually they used the hood in order to spare the hangman and the audience for the convicted's facial expressions. The hood's purpose could also be the convicted didn't need to see his/her death since that could be very frightening and in some places they had the hood on, so related couldn't recognize them and help them escaping. The convicted's hands and feet gets tied so they can't escape so easily.

From what I've heard the tongue and eye bulging is a false myth. If you had your mouth closed and your tongue inside it when you gets hanged and if you didn't stick it out before the hangman pulled the lever, it's hard to open your mouth and it's less likely the tongue would hang out. The rope do keep your jaw shut. The eyes wouldn't pop out either, but the eyes may looks red if the convicted have cried. The convicted sometimes dies with their eyes open instead of closed and sometimes they do roll their eyes in addition to their face color change. It may get pink a period before it turns pale, depending on how much they struggle before dying.

In the scene in the movie "The mummy" it's a hanging scene that illustrates what's happening to your face when you gets hanged. It's up to you if you wants to see it or not. The actor does a good job.

it's was to spare the crowd from having to see the agonized face of the condemned and to save the condemned from being exposed at such a time. It was meant as an act of kindness.

what happens to the guy's face?

I've read that the eyes can pop out and there's typically blood coming out of the eyes also and the tongue can sometimes hangout looking swollen and purple. And if done incorrectly the person's head could come off.

The head could only come off if the long drop hanging were too long. If the person had their tongue inside their mouth when they gets hanged, I don't think it would suddenly hang out. I've heard it's hard to open your mouth and the tongue falling out if you gets hanged. And isn't the eyes pop out a false myth too?

I don't know I tried looking it up but I can't seem to find anything relating to hanging executions. And I'd rather not find pictures of people without the hood.

They're tied so they can't try and remove the noose from their neck or attempt to escape. And the hood is to spare the audience from seeing their suffering.

The hood is wore to not show contortions of the face if the drop does not snap the neck. The feet and hands are tied to prefect additional movement and spas they to not hold the rope around their neck and fight the execution.
